ADHD - psycho-education, understanding what ADHD is and how it impacts on you.
All of us, at some point in our lives, are likely to feel overwhelmed by our feelings and/or circumstances. Relationship breakdowns, single parenting, bereavement, loss, family issues, depression, anxiety, etc. can leave us struggling to function as well as we would like. I am passionate about supporting my clients through difficult situations and empowering them to reach their full potential. I can offer you a confidential, supportive, welcoming and non-judgemental space where we can look together at what is distressing you and find the best way forward.

I have specific additional training in working with adults with ADHD & co-occurring concerns and have personal understanding of the dynamics of ADHD/NT relationships, so also work with partners seeking support within their relationship.
Being a person-centred, integrative counsellor I would offer sensitivity to the uniqueness of your story and perspective, and integrate different modes of working if beneficial and appropriate. I work relationally and holistically taking into account the whole self and how different parts or experiences may interrelate and impact on one another.

Have you recently received an ADHD diagnosis and are unsure how to proceed?.
As an experienced counsellor I work to help unpack which challenges are related to understanding how your mind works and which parts are a result of the weight of rejections, criticism and self doubt you have accumulated from being held account to a set of rules which never matched your mind type in the first place.

For those young people who are struggling with a presentation of ADHD I will look to support and offer a referral to my professional colleague who is able to diagnose.
Offering a warm acceptance of all clients, its important in those early sessions that rapport is built and that we work together to understand goals for Counselling. For younger clients this is sometimes hard to communicate and therefore I look to introduce creative ways for them to be able to express themselves. I understand that each client is unique and therefore adapt our sessions to meet the needs of the individual, whether that is creating a safe confidential space just to be heard or supporting with a suite of Cognitive Behavioural Tools to aid negative thinking or behaviour.

I also support those with ADHD and/or Autism to improve self-understanding and wellbeing.
Starting therapy takes courage and it may feel daunting given that talking openly about your distress may evoke feelings of vulnerability. The therapeutic relationship is often the vehicle for positive change so finding the right ‘fit’ is important. Therefore, please contact me for a free telephone/video consultation to find out more. As a Clinical Psychologist my job is to listen with compassion to your life story and help you make sense of any troubles or trauma that you are facing within your life, whether that be in your present or reoccurring from your past.

Are you questioning life, struggling, feeling lost, wondering what is wrong and why does it feel I'm not getting it quite right! You're not alone and within us we all have the need to be connected with ourselves and sometimes we struggle feeling connected to others, to feel okay and have our own sense of purpose. We live in a fast pace changing world, which doesn't always support us, when we wish to be truly heard, at our pace and to have the private time to reflect and make changes.

As a person, and a counsellor with over 10 years' experience, I am aware that finding our way through the challenges of life can sometimes seem like an impossible task. Often, we won't share our experience with others because we don't want to be a burden or, we are fearful of being judged. As your counsellor I will offer you the time and space for you to reflect on your feelings, as you process what is going on for you. Our relationship will be one where you feel heard, valued and supported on your journey of self-discovery.

Perhaps your child is unhappy at school or experiencing confusion, distress, loneliness, social difficulties or is struggling to navigate the many developmental and emotional challenges that are part of growing up. Maybe you have tried every approach you can think of to support your child and feel that some clarity or a different perspective on your situation would help. It might be that a specific event or big change in your child’s life has unsettled them and they would benefit from speaking with a trained professional to be able to better understand what they are going through.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioural therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
