Couples Counselling in Caterham
Twenty years ago I was asking many of the same questions as the couples I have specialised in helping for the past 15 years.
Most couples can see the difficulties they are experiencing but have little understanding of what is actually keeping them stuck. They can see the arguments, distance, resentment, loss of intimacy or breakdown in trust, but often cannot see the dynamic operating between them that creates and maintains these difficulties. Until this becomes visible,

As children, most of us, are taught how to brush our teeth , wash our hands and tie our laces. However, we are not always taught how to take care of our hearts, how to feed our souls and nurture our body and minds. Moving through life without these skills can leave us feeling overwhelmed, lost, confused and hopeless when faced with life challenges and change. We may find it difficult or not know how to, altogether cope or regulate our emotions and body and practice self-care.These experiences can manifest as interruptions, disconnecting us and leave us feeling stuck, afraid, angry, stressed.

Counselling & Psychotherapy / Relationship Issues / Couples Counselling / Psychosexual Therapy / Gender, Sexuality and Relationship Diversities Therapist (LGBTQ+) / Clinical Supervision
Hello, my name is Michelle, As a counsellor and psychotherapist, I am all too aware of just how daunting taking that initial step towards counselling can be. The mere fact that you are reading this now means you are just a phone call away from putting that right. While we sometimes turn to a friend or family member in our hour of need, it is when the problem lies with our nearest and dearest that we should consult with a professional.

I am a BACP registered psychotherapist who has experience of helping people (individuals and couples) at life’s most difficult junctions.
It can be helpful to look at early attachment patterns, behaviours and scripts which can help to uncover outdated modes of operation that can still (unhelpfully) rule our lives today. I work with clients to reframe unhelpful thinking patterns, regulate emotions and learn to relate to others in a healthy way.

For couples I use Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.
I work with challenges that may arise for parents at different stages, including fertility issues and baby loss, gender disappointment, fear of birth, birth trauma, intrusive thoughts and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), antenatal and postnatal anxiety and depression, difficulty bonding. I support parents to adjust whether it is their first child or they are juggling a growing family. I believe that people are always trying their best to cope, but sometimes these ways of coping stop working as well or become problems themselves. I know how much pressure there is to be ‘perfect’ parents and how much strain that can cause.

From time to time everyone experiences stress, sadness, anger, relational conflict and grief which we often suffer alone. Accepting help from others can be difficult but maybe you feel you’ve toughing it out on your own for too long.
Whether you are struggling with an identifiable trauma or you’ve reached a point where recurring feelings are becoming unmanageable; a course of psychotherapeutic counselling may help you make sense of what is happening and enable you to gain and maintain some stability. Feelings of fear, anger, rejection and lack of confidence are difficult areas and discussing them with friends too raw and personal.

I focus on the deeper patterns which shape how you behave, think and feel- especially around money, self-worth, relationships and belonging.
Most people come to me when they have reached a point where insight alone is not enough. They are successful, capable and often appear very composed whilst privately they are overwhelmed with anxiety (often with a financial aspect), relational conflict, burnout, identity shifts, or long standing patterns they cannot seem to change. They have tried managing, coping and pushing through but something deeper needs to be understood.
If this is where you find yourself, you are not alone and we can navigate this together.
I work well with adults who are reflective and ready to understand themselves at depth.

Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
