I wonder if a particular change, loss or relationship has left you feeling disconnected from others? I endeavour to provide a supportive relationship to enable you to open up about aspects of your life causing worry, sadness or stress. I can help with a broad range of issues such as trauma, anxiety , suicidal thoughts, depression, stress, loss, grief, bereavement, workplace wellbeing issues, gender and sexuality.
Life can leave you feeling many different thoughts and feelings, anything from amazing to awful, and sometimes we need support to make sense of our lives, experiences and emotions. They say "a problem shared is a problem halved" and getting things off your chest confidentially and safely with a therapist can help. Even at the best and worst times of our lives, we need a caring, empathic and compassionate other to listen and share our experiences with, to feel we belong and are loved. Therapy allows you the space to determine what's best for you, despite limitations, to thrive, to accept yourself and become who you are meant to be.

A situation may occur whereby you experience a crisis, bereavement, family/relationship difficulty, trauma or deep sadness making life very unsettled. This imbalance sometimes means that people seek out support through counselling to share concerns and feelings. Reaching out can be a massive step for many people, but it is such an important step.

Everyone is different and counselling is not a 'one size fits all' approach which is why I trained to be an integrative counsellor. Sometimes in life we feel out of control, lonely, stuck, struggle to cope, repeat destructive patterns or wonder why we're in the same situation again. You don't have to be 'mentally ill' to need or benefit from counselling. It can help with developing self-awareness, improving relationships and making better informed decisions

Both my own experiences of OCD from an early age & my clinical training have led me to deeply understand OCD, & how to recover from it. Because of this, I know that it’s so important to have an OCD therapist who really understands you. And now, you are no longer on your own with OCD - you have found a private OCD specialist who has been where you are now, & has successfully recovered from OCD. I understand the nature of your intrusive thoughts, obsessions, compulsions, struggles, & distress, & how to guide you out of your OCD labyrinth.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about an increase in anxiety (GAD) and depression for many people, particularly those of school and college age.
I am an experienced and qualified counsellor working full time in my profession. It is very important to feel comfortable working with a counsellor with whom you have a relationship built upon trust, openness and honesty, where you feel at ease and accepted without judgement. I offer an initial free telephone consultation where we can discuss any queries you may have around counselling. This is important so we can identify together how therapy can be useful to you. I explain how I work and what you can expect from me. I work regularly with clients with a variety of issues including anxiety , low mood, family concerns & bereavement

I have been working for over 20 years with people who have a wide range of issues including, relationship and work problems, low self esteem, addictions and other forms of self harm, abuse, eating disorders, bereavement as well as people who suffer from stress and anxiety or feel low, depressed and suicidal. I am also qualified to work with couples and groups about relationships. Most of my training and work as a counsellor has been about really learning to listen to people, hearing the ‘music’ behind their words and sensing their deepest feelings, hurts, joys and fears as it is then that therapeutic healing can occur.

I work with people who feel they are ready to address some kind of dis-ease in their lives, whether that is an anxiety , an addiction or stress-related physical pain. Many of these issues take time to address properly although people often experience relief relatively quickly. I worked as a teacher before becoming a psychotherapist, and still like the Greek word for teaching: pedagogy, which has at its heart the idea of accompanying. I aim to accompany people on their journey; I rarely offer advice but work WITH people to help them understand themselves, what they want, and the best way forward for them.

During my two years of working in relapse prevention, I have supported clients going through a range of problems both surrounding and extending beyond their addiction, such as: anxiety , depression, relationship troubles both platonic and romantic, self-esteem and bereavement.
Our minds can be confusing places at times. Especially when it comes to issues of mental health. It may feel hard to talk about certain things with friends and loved ones for many reasons, and it can feel like there’s no way to escape these problems. I can offer you a safe, confidential space to help you make more sense of your situation, help you throw your problems into a new light and perhaps give you a new perspective on what’s going on for you. I work in a holistic way, which takes into account you as a whole person and not just a problem that needs to be treated.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
