Hi, I'm John. I offer down to earth counselling to help you make sense of whatever it is you're experiencing. I will offer you time and space for you to talk through your problems confidentially. I am there to listen to you. I will not use complicated jargon but will listen to what you have to say, with an appropriate use of humour to put you at ease. I will try to see the world through your eyes, whilst not judging and being genuine. I served in the Royal Navy and worked in high-pressured Businesses. My Facebook Page is Counselling Minds. Also on Instagram, Linkedin and Twitter. Thanks for reading! I hope to hear from you soon.

I am an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist who works with adults in person or online. My approach is informal and relaxed. I don’t make judgements or tell you what you should do or think. I begin by helping you describe what is troubling you. I listen carefully and support you to make sense of your experiences, thoughts, and emotions. I help you to find meanings, identify patterns, and explore your choices. I support you to think about yourself more compassionately and clearly; strengthen your sense of who you are and better understand your relationships. An approach confirmed by current research to aid positive change.

Please note - I am not currently taking clients due to being on maternity leave until November 24. I am an experienced, empathic, creative therapist, working with children, young people, and adults who may be experiencing stress and low mood, worries, or feel down about themselves. I support individuals who have experienced trauma, or who are struggling with difficult life experiences. I have training and experience in both therapeutic person centred counselling, creative therapies, and cognitive behavioural therapy, so can adapt my approach to meet your needs. Being a mum myself, I understand how important support is for families.

Navigating overwhelming feelings alone can be daunting. Starting on the path of seeking therapeutic support is a significant step. Within counselling and psychotherapy, there are no ‘one size fits all’ approaches. I am trained in a number of therapies which means that I offer a wide menu of therapeutic techniques, tailoring therapy to your specific needs and preferences. Our work can be structured and focused, or exploratory and discovery based, depending on your goals. I blend cognitive behavioural therapy with person centred practice and can use specific therapy models if needed.

Counselling & Couples Therapy are very normal, and transformational at the same time. I offer a safe, confidential space to be you. Here we can explore what is troubling you, what's working for you and what isn't; who you are, and what you want out of life. Give yourself the time to simply sit down, breathe and talk freely. I am a warm, thoughtful, sensitive, and empathic therapist, and I bring compassion, intuition, creativity, humour, and an eye for life’s details to my practice. Alongside my formal training I draw from a broad life experience including motherhood, travel, a career in cake design, and my own therapeutic journey.

People usually come to therapy because there is something they want to change. I offer a warm and friendly talking space where we can explore and identify what this is, using cognitive behaviour therapy ultimately to help you feel better. CBT is a talking therapy which helps people to understand more about how the way we think about ourselves, other people and the world, impacts on our feelings and actions. It is very practical and has lots of tools, techniques and ways of thinking about things. This can really help you to feel better, see things differently and make changes.

With my brother diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia nearly 30 years ago, I have personal experience of the family sacrifices and struggles related to the pain and stigma of mental illness. Having since, committing my life to the improvement of people’s emotional fitness and mental resilience, with support from organisations such as SANE and MIND, my own journey has allowed me to discover the true benefits of therapy first-hand. Personal therapy is proving invaluable for people to manage certain difficult or crisis situations in their lives and so transform their problems into major opportunities for personal growth.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck, but aren’t sure why? Do you find yourself struggling with emotions that seem out of control, or behaviours that you can’t explain? You might be feeling disconnected, constantly on edge, or find yourself reacting strongly to situations that seem minor. These patterns and emotions may stem from trauma, which can leave lasting marks on your mental, emotional and physical health. Trauma isn’t just about what happened to you; it’s about how those experiences are affecting you now. You don’t have to live with these struggles alone.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
