Maureen Seddon is an accredited and experienced EMDR Therapist with over 40 years of experience working with people in both the NHS and the private sector. Maureen originally qualified as a general nurse in Liverpool in 1982, training in mental health in 1984. Maureen trained in EMDR as she felt other therapies did not address the original causation of symptoms/triggers without causing further distress. Maureen targets the origin of the trauma in a holistic way.

I became a therapist because I like people - I like to understand their stories and how that has brought them to where they are. When you are feeling stuck because of anxiety or depression it is usually pretty difficult to believe anyone would want to listen. Well I do. I want to help you discover and explore the events, thoughts, feelings, and patterns of behaviour that have made you feel trapped so that you can make changes. Imagine being able to see your friends, attend events, even just sleep , without anxious or self critical thoughts wearing you down. That is what therapy with me can offer.

Hi and welcome. If starting or restarting therapy is something you have been thinking about doing for some time, congratulations on taking this step. You may be feeling low, distressed or anxious. Perhaps sleep or daily tasks are more difficult than they used to be. Maybe you're finding less fulfilment in things that used to bring you joy (or stopped doing them altogether) You could be unsure about what you want from life. Or you might be struggling to process something difficult that happened to you or someone you care about. Maybe you've lost a job, a relationship, a loved one. Whatever you are dealing with, therapy can help.

I work with clients on any issue at all such as anxiety, depression, bereavement, stress, relationship issues, trauma, eating issues, sleep problems, addiction, anger and low self esteem.
Are you struggling with everyday life at the moment, or are you not feeling yourself? Do you have lots of thoughts going round your head and you don’t know what to do about them? Taking some time out to talk to an experienced therapist can really help. Together we can explore your feelings and worries, better understand where they come from and also figure out what changes you could make to help you feel happier. I aim to listen and be truly alongside you throughout the sessions as you talk about anything that you want to bring – be it experiences from the past, things that are happening now, or concerns for the future.

During my time with Cruse, I have helped my clients with various difficulties including sleep issues, trauma, anxiety, low mood and depression, eating issues and relationship issues.
As a CBT therapist I am passionate about how the therapeutic alliance can help a client to explore their feelings about the difficulties they are experiencing in life. I believe that by providing a safe, calm and relaxing space, talk therapy can play a vital role in improving a client's mental health. Together, I work with my clients to identify how problems manifest themselves, put these findings into perspective by guiding them through a process working towards setting new goals, adopting new coping strategies and providing them with the relevant tools to continue to work on improving their mental health.

I have a particular interest in the connection between our mental and physical wellbeing, including how our lifestyle, nutrition, and sleep impact on our mental health, and equally how our thoughts can impact on our physical health.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
