pain
.
I’m an experienced and qualified Person-Centred Counsellor / Psychotherapist. As your counsellor I offer a safe, respectful space for you, where you can explore personal issues and emotions, within a gentle and warm approach. It may be that you are feeling anxious or stressed and would like to explore these in order to move towards a feeling of emotional well being. Perhaps you might want to talk about difficulties at work, with family, personal relationships or sexual difficulties. Counselling can support you to find the resilience to work through these with courage and to find coping methods.

If you feel stuck or at a loss with your life, perhaps due to past or present experiences (for example relationship difficulties,
illness
, work problems, losses); or if thoughts and emotions are difficult to bear (maybe resulting in feelings of anxiety, depression, loneliness or emptiness), you might benefit from talking – sharing with somebody who is there just for you, unbiased and non-judgemental. We would work at building a therapeutic relationship based on mutual trust and respect so that a safe and protected space can be created.

We all experience emotional
pain
; as an infant, a child, a teenager, a parent and an adult. Whether it’s in response to life events (e.g. loss, trauma, moves), transitions (e.g. to adolescents, as a parent, retirement), adjustment to ill health (e.g. cancer, chronic
illness
, injury) or life in general (e.g. long term low mood or anxiety). Accepting that we need help and support can be hard and daunting. Getting the right help is important and can teach you how to live a fulfilling life.

Life, and our lived experience of it, is complex. Often times we choose not to look into this complexity for fear of being overwhelmed by unwanted truths and emotions. This approach may work for some of us for a while, however for most - life will confront us with
pain
that is difficult to ignore. The avoidance of this
pain
or reality is what leads to mental health symptoms and prolonged distress. However, life does not need to be so difficult. If you would like to make sense of your life and unique lived experienced in order to lead a more fulfilled existence, please get in touch.

Are you stressed, depressed, anxious, sad or just not feeling yourself? Then counselling might be something that can help you, whether it is a new concern or a long held one. Sometimes emotional
pain
or life events can temporarily cloud your ability to see possible solutions, leaving you feeling stuck, confused, unhappy, anxious, sad or even shut down. The process of talking about this can gradually make things seem clearer as you make sense of your feelings and your thoughts become more ordered. You can feel change taking place, sometimes to your own surprise and so start to find a way forward that feels right for you.

Are you living with the worry and uncertainty that a cancer diagnosis brings? Or maybe you are struggling to cope with an incurable cancer, fearful of the future. You may be trying to rebuild your life after cancer but feel lost or isolated. If this is you or someone close then I can help. Entering the cancer world can feel like being dropped on another planet without a map. You don’t want to be there, and you can't speak the language. As a cancer nurse and counsellor I have supported many people and their loved ones, through the
pain
of diagnosis, treatment, life after cancer and sadly sometimes their grief, and I can help you.

Chronic Pain Counsellors
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
