Growing up neurodivergent (ND) can have an influence on your ability to connect, express emotions, feel whole & valuable due to society wanting you to conform to neurotypical (NT) standards. You may be realising the effects of growing up as an ND child especially if you were diagnosed as an adult, or you may be struggling to let go of the NT standards & thrive as a ND adult. Counselling is a great place to build a secure sense of self that helps you feel calm & centred through the difficult times. Together we can heal the disconnection, build coping strategies to recover from burnout & develop strength from the challenges you face.

I have lived experience of ADHD , my daughter had a late diagnosis after struggling for years to figure out what was wrong.
Sometimes we find ourselves stuck and unsure of how to move forward. This could be due to a big life change, loss, relationship issues, parenting issues, anxiety, depression or making an important decision (to name a few). Maybe you don’t know why you feel stuck or unhappy and feel that you shouldn’t be! You’ve taken the first step by reaching out for help. I realise that counselling can feel daunting and overwhelming. I can offer you a safe, confidential space to explore any obstacle that you are struggling with, without judgement. Sometimes we need someone to just listen.

I have experience with anxiety, depression, bereavement, loss, low self-esteem, ADHD , family/ relationship issues, difficult childhood experiences, panic attacks, trauma and other general anxiety disorders.
Support, warmth, understanding and acceptance, together with a professional service, this is what I base my counselling practice on. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, frustrating, unfair...even cruel, throwing so many unexpected hurdles in our way. Struggling can be a lonely, isolating place and sometimes we need more than just talking with family or friends. I offer a calm, confidential, non-judgemental space to truly be heard and listened to in which you can explore your struggles or confusions and, hopefully, enable you to recover your own perspective and clarity surrounding whatever difficulties are impacting your life.

I’m experienced in adapting therapy for clients who have autism and ADHD / ADD .
Choosing a professional to help you with your struggles can be a stressful process. Many people have heard of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy but aren’t sure what it involves, and don’t know whether they need CBT, counselling or something else. That’s not a problem - I will provide an initial phone or video consultation to answer questions, listen to your concerns and discuss with you what you are looking for. My first session involves an assessment of your current difficulties from the perspective of a trained mental health professional, and working with you to establish whether CBT or counselling would be most beneficial for you.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioural therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
