I hold a BA(Hons) in integrative relational counselling and a registered member of BACP. I have a number of years of experience working in the charity and private sector, supporting clients with a wide range of emotional issues. At the heart of my counselling practice is the aim to provide a space where you can come to breathe, to be, and find unconditional acceptance, positive reflection and discover alternative narratives and perspectives for yourself. A relationship that enables that to occur, allows for the development of self-awareness, self- acceptance, hope and healing.

Coming to counselling is an adventure! It can be immense fun and incredibly inspirational. It can also be hard and will certainly make you take a good look at yourself! If you want to make changes in your life then counselling is one of the most effective ways to do it... and I will help you along the way, walking alongside you, giving you support. It is a great privilege for me - and I deeply value the vulnerable person (within all of us) that counselling helps to find the courage to reveal. I work with kindness, warmth and respect, and our relationship will become strong - yet I will challenge you - but in a caring and gentle way.

Psychoanalytical Psychoanalysis and Integrative Counselling: "The speed and accuracy by which Chris was able to work out our personalities and provide genuinely useful insight was, quite frankly, incredible.  This insight, hard as it was to digest, proved to be so profound to me that I was finally able to unpick what had being going on in my relationship.  His ability to sum up the relationship in one stark metaphor was a watershed moment for me.  Through his insight and continued support I have managed to start to discover myself again and to regain my confidence which had been systematically dismantled."  Mr. M, 2019, Canterbury.

If you have come to a point in your life where things have become too much and you feel you or a member of your family need some extra support, then counselling is a great way to reach out. Through building honest, trusting relationships, I aim to help my clients understand and overcome their difficulties while developing tools to help them in the future. I am an integrative counsellor, which means I draw from a number of different approaches to counselling. This allows for an open space where we can find the best way of working which suits you. This might include creative work, sharing my knowledge on theory or using mindfulness.

By creating a non-judgemental place on a weekly basis, you are able to explore your thoughts and feelings at a deeper level. We learn to sit with uncomfortable and unwanted feelings in order to understand where they really stem from. Any feelings that we repress can turn into projections, anxiety, panic attacks, even depression....etc. it is crucial that we explore why we cope the way we do and what holds us back from processing certain feelings. Keeping up with the new self-diagnosis trend I welcome neurodiversity!

I can help you in an empathic and intuitive way offering resolution for all those difficult emotional problems in life. I have 20 years NHS experience providing psychological therapies, managing also a crisis team and liaison psychiatry service. I offer attachment-informed EMDR integrated with IFS ‘parts’ therapy. This approach creatively interweaves trauma therapy and Internal Family Systems therapy. I trained at Goldsmiths College; and at Kings College London. Attachment informed Emdr combined with IFS is arguably the best therapy available today.

You come to me because you desire impactive integrative counselling and psychotherapy with aspects of personal coaching and mentoring. My approach is predominately analytical, seeking to identify and treat the causes of symptoms, both conscious and unconscious. Such insights reduce repeated patterns of thinking and behaviours that cause depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. With a background in philosophy, linguistics and the law we use a socratic but person-centred approach which established what you want to achieve before agreeing a bespoke plan for treatment.

Hello, I hope this profile answers any questions you may have about therapy and the way I work. Although I work mostly online, my aim remains the same as face to face working which is to offer a safe and empathic space for the therapy process to take place. During the sessions we may think about your current situation and make links to past experiences at times to consider the impact they may have had on you, and look for ways of moving forwards. I specialise in the areas of trauma, anxiety and relationship difficulties.

Spirituality Counsellors

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
