It is very much deeper than many 'surface' therapies which are rolled out by health departments.
I am a highly experienced, dedicated & skilled Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist & Psychodynamic Counsellor & work with adults, couples & young people. I have accreditation & am registered with the UKCP. I have 20 years experience. As a child, I knew I wanted to help people – so later, I trained with Victim Support, adult crisis services, children's charities, schools, and the NHS. At the University of Kent I obtained a Post-Grad Diploma and Master of Clinical Science (Psychotherapy) degree. I supervised and trained counsellors. No personal identifying information is stored on computers or devices of any kind. The sky is the limit!

Are you living with the symptoms of emotional ‘trauma’, distressing memories and abrupt emotional triggers? Is this making life, work and relationships more difficult? Perhaps you experience flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, panic attacks, phobias, anger, fear? Maybe you get distracted, get startled, and even dissociate and lose your self? Modern therapies approach emotional problems through a 'trauma lens' knowing the ‘Body Keeps the Score’. In this way, I can help you relate again to all parts of your self and process traumatic memories. I used internal family systems' therapy integrated with EMDR therapy.

Helping people rediscover the power to make choices is my main counselling focus. I am trained in a variety of therapeutic frameworks but the bedrock of my approach is increasing your awareness of your present experience instead of becoming lost in the past. This is the approach I will take in medium to long term and open ended counselling. I have specific training in short term therapy, which we can use on specific problems you may have identified for 6-12 sessions.

Psycho-dynamically and group-analytically trained, I believe that a good deal of trauma, depression and anxiety originate in childhood experience, often unacknowledged by others if not by the distressed person. This includes separation, loss and bereavement, sexual and physical abuse. These experiences need exploration alongside a trained practitioner. In a confidential therapy group, which is for sitting down and talking, each member of up to 8, takes part by talking, listening, feeling and responding, building trust, with a boundary observed of no social contact beyond group sessions. We use only first names.

Most of us will experience sexual and relationship difficulties at some point in our lives and yet it can still be very challenging and embarrassing discussing them. Talking to an experienced and qualified psychosexual and relationship therapist can help you identify the difficulties you are experiencing, understand and explore different ways you can overcome these challenges and move forward. I aim to create a confidential and safe place where you feel able to talk about these issues in a non-shaming way. I am a sex positive therapist and I am comfortable exploring alternative sexual interests.

Anxiety, stress, confusion, grief, and anger are just a few of the feelings that I have seen clients finding relief from, during our work together. I support you in addressing difficult or painful issues from your past and present. By listening to what's going on beneath the surface and through new insights, whatever gets in the way of you reaching your full potential will be brought to light.

My approach (integrative hu manist) enables me to draw on several counselling theories which means that I am able to respond flexibly to each client’s specific situation and needs.
You don't have to struggle on your own - I can support you to make positive changes, build resilience and achieve personal growth. My experience is that counselling can assist us with the problems we encounter in life and can help us overcome self-destructive attitudes and behaviour. I will provide you with a comfortable, safe and confidential space where your thoughts and feelings can be explored and worked through. This talking therapy helps my clients to find a more constructive way of living and a stronger sense of inner fulfillment. Counselling can be either short or long term to fit in with your needs.

I work well with clients who have already begun their journey of self-discovery and healing, who are curious about themselves and are open to trying new things. Perhaps you have already experienced psychotherapy and you did not get from it quite what you hoped. My clients often report difficulties in their relationships, self-limiting beliefs, anxiety, depression, bereavement or unacknowledged and unresolved childhood trauma. I am interested in spirituality, sexuality, parts work, generational trauma, dysfunctional family life, the nervous system, self-harm, developmental and event trauma, relational and somatic work.

Benvenuti (Welcome!), my name is Umberto, and I believe that when someone experiences pain, confusion, anxiety, alienation, fear, self-doubt, or questions their identity, what they need most is understanding. Providing gentle, empathetic support can illuminate their path and facilitate healing. In such times, the ability to deeply understand and empathise represents the greatest gift we can give to another

Hi there and thanks for stopping by on my profile. If you're reading this then it's likely you need help with the kind of pain that's making it difficult to concentrate on or even know what you're doing in life. And this life pain might be affecting the focus you have on your relationship or what you do. Or maybe your relationship or what you do is affecting this life pain, or bringing your attention further towards it. It might feel like you're on a boat adrift on a river, not knowing where you're going towards, how you got there or that you even have any oars. And it's hard to talk about or even articulate the way you feel.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
