I have a particular interest in bereavement, having trained with Cruse Bereavement Support, and also in suicide -ideation, through many years of working with- and training listening volunteers for the Samaritans.
Perhaps you're feeling anxious, stressed, or just a bit out of sorts? Perhaps you're always thinking of others before yourself and you've suddenly realised that you're important too? Maybe changes are afoot and you want someone to help you navigate them. Often we talk to family and friends and get lots of advice which just confuses us: we want to yell 'why won't you just listen?' I can provide that safe listening space where you can explore your feelings without judgment. A place where you can feel supported to work through issues or traumas which maybe you've been aware of for a long time, but which you haven't wanted to address.

The thought of seeing a stranger to discuss personal issues is scary, but as I'm an empathetic, calm, caring person I try to ensure that you feel as relaxed as you possibly can. As well as having many 'tools' within my 'toolbox' to help people move forward in life, I also have a very good listening ear. I ensure to give people a safe environment where they can get any issues off their chest, knowing that what is said is confidential. A little about me, I have worked within mental health and other social care settings for many years, which means I have a good knowledge on many conditions. I offer a free 20 minute initial consultation

The reasons we seek counselling are many and varied. Sometimes there is a sudden loss or trauma, but sometimes there are layers of difficult experiences where one more is too many, and we can become overwhelmed. These may be current events or traumatic experiences from long ago that continue to affect life today. We may begin to distance ourselves from friends and family as we try to make sense of difficult feelings and emotions alone. Perhaps because we don't want to burden others or from unresolved or misplaced feelings of guilt or shame. Reaching out for support can be the hardest first step to healing and positive change.

Firstly, we would explore together the presenting issues to establish a focus and goal for the work in terms of what you want or need to achieve. In following sessions these will be kept in mind as part of a process of becoming the best version of yourself; looking at your options, yours strengths and your qualities as well as addressing the difficulties you are having with the more challenging areas of your life. These could be social and relational issues, anxiety, depression, stress or bereavement and loss. Or managing a new or long-standing mental health condition.

When you contact me initially I will walk you through some of the options and if we decide to work together I will meet you (or you and your family/significant people in your life) ‘where you are’ in life. We may decide to focus on getting a better understanding of the ways that your early experiences have influenced the ways you perceive the world and relate to people around you. We may focus purely on the present and your goals for the future. Based on your circumstances we may decide to do some time limited or long term therapy.

I am a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor (BA Hons in Integrative-Relational Counselling) providing short and long-term online individual counselling. As an integrative counsellor, I use several approaches to best meet your individual needs. I aim to provide a safe and welcoming environment so as to encourage you to freely express your feelings and thoughts, a place to be truly heard. I will work at your own pace, where I don’t believe change can be forced but that once you look honestly and compassionately at where you are at, it invariably follows.

At times, we can all experience difficult thoughts and feelings or a sense of being “stuck”: counselling can help us work through these, develop a better relationship with ourselves and those around us, and gain clarity and insight into the issues that are causing us problems. I believe that we all possess the resources to work through our problems, but at times these can become hidden and feel out of reach. My aim is to help you identify what you need and re-connect with your own resources.

Hi I’m Katie a highly experienced registered therapist specialising in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Counselling. I provide a warm, empathetic space using CBT to help clients break viscous cycles which cause distress such as anxiety and depression by helping them understand the relationship between thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours. As everyone's stories are unique we work collaboratively together forming a bespoke treatment plan which includes specific interventions targeted at treating your issue(s). During the first session I undertake an assessment of needs in order to tailor the therapy to you.

What type of mental health professional is right for me?
Some of the most common types of mental health providers in Cambridge are psychologists, licensed counsellors, therapists, and psychotherapists, all of whom diagnose mental health conditions and provide individualised treatment.

Services offered, education, and credentials vary by type of mental health professional. Each professional in Cambridge then may specialise in certain areas, such as depression, marriage counselling, or anxiety. Although many mental health providers are not licensed to prescribe medication, they may coordinate with a provider who can.

Both in-person and online therapy sessions are available from most psychologists.
How to find a specialist?
You can refine your search using the filters on this page. There are several categories you can filter by to find mental health professionals with the experience you are looking for. You may want to filter for CBT Psychologists in Cambridge, or Child Psychologists in Cambridge.

Many find it useful to use filters to view only psychologists that have experience working with certain issues, like Cambridge psychologists specialising in EMDR.

What method of therapy is right for me?
When it comes to treatment methods, there's no 'right way.’ Each method of therapy can be beneficial for a variety of issues. Psychologists in Cambridge specialise in therapeutic approaches such as CBT, EMDR, and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), among others. Finding a psychologist or counsellor who is a good fit for you is the most important step to discovering what type of therapy, or combination of therapeutic approaches, will meet your individual needs. Learn what to expect from different types of therapy and how they work.

Can I afford counselling?
Yes. Most counsellors offer reasonable rates or will work on a sliding scale basis. Many accept health insurance. Feel free to discuss this when you contact the counsellor.
