I never set out to work with a specific kind of person, however, around 70% of my clients tend to be
women
aged between 30 and 45. They worry, feel stressed and not good enough. They often find themselves saying 'what if' all the time having lost their zest for life without any knowledge of why! It might be triggered by past traumatic events, the challenges of juggling life, family or work. These feelings might be a new, unexplained experience or they may have been around for decades. Does this sound like you? Even if this doesn't, you may be like the other 30% of people I work with, and you matter too!

You are not alone. Whatever your difficulties may be, there is always a way forward. Therapy may be the right choice for you if you are looking to reduce distress, improve your wellbeing and achieve your goals. Clients who meet with me gain a greater understanding of their difficulties and develop the ability to overcome these. If you are feeling overwhelmed, find yourself unable to move away from unhelpful thoughts or memories, or just sense that things are not quite right, then please get in touch to discuss whether therapy could be of benefit to you.

My work centres around trauma, developmental trauma, emotional neglect and the capacity to understand and express feelings and emotions. Through working with body awareness, somatically and with mindfulness breathing, you will come to understand how these feelings arise in the first place; why your body responds and behaves a particularl way; why you say things in a particular way; why you act as you do. As you become aware of the effect of this on yourself and others, you can make decisions and choices on how to change this, so that you can live your life fully and authentically, and to its full potential.

Life can be difficult. Talking with a counsellor can help you draw perspectives, skills and strategies from within yourself and to find in yourself sources of empowerment you were not aware you had to meet life's challenges and grow. 'Counselling Changes Lives' (BACP). When you invite a counselling relationship into your life, you and your counsellor create together a very safe space, completely of your own, where you can explore in total confidence the distress and vulnerability that are leading you to seek out counselling now, at a level which you perhaps could not share or bring to even those who are closest to you.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
