Life can become extremely difficult: things may seem overwhelming and out of control following a recent event or trauma; possibly something from your past has returned to worry you; or you realise that you need to finally tackle something you have been suffering with for a long time; perhaps you need to make an important decision and can’t think how to do so; or maybe you are plagued with anxiety or unhappy but with no clear idea as to why. Talking to someone and being fully listened to, without being judged, can be the start of a process of coming to terms with difficult and traumatic experiences.

I am an analytical psychologist, psychotherapist, and supervisor based in Cambridge. While I work with a wide variety of people who have a range of issues and concerns, each person who comes to see me is special and each problem or concern they have is unique to them. Some of the concerns and issues that bring people to contact me are deep trauma and feelings of desperation, while others find themselves faced with an unexpected situation or difficult decision or want to explore and develop a deeper understanding of their life experience.

I work in Cambridge offering short or long-term counselling (online and face-to-face) to people from a variety of backgrounds, including students and young adults. My aim is to provide a warm, safe and confidential environment where people feel comfortable to talk about their lives. Everyone comes with something different to talk about - perhaps you've got relationship issues, or you are at a turning point in your life. Maybe you want to talk about how the past is impacting on you right now. What matters is feeling supported and guided as you explore your world.

Do you feel held back by anxiety or depression and you’re wondering how to make sense of your situation and find a path towards a better life? Perhaps you’ve reached the point where you know things have to change, and you’re ready to explore the underlying cause of your distress and make changes. It might be that the relationships in your life are causing you great pain or maybe to the outside world you look like you’re living your best life but internally you’re overwhelmed and struggling.

We all have times when we feel life is not the way we would like it to be. Relationships, work, big life events like serious illness, losing a loved one, redundancy or retirement; or issues and events like climate change, politics or the general state of the world - all these can get us down, and sometimes make us feel we’ve lost our way. The voice inside us that tells us there’s hope and something to look forward to can become very faint; we may hear it but not know what it’s saying; we may stop hearing it altogether. My approach to counselling starts with a belief that you can get back in touch with that voice.

As a BACP accredited couples psychotherapist, I've been privileged to assist individuals and couples with relational issues for over 17 years. I'd like to invite you to the process of discovering and learning how to move beyond the conflict and disconnection to cultivate an intimate, passionate relationship. You don't need to lose yourself or your partner. I firmly believe that with hope, intention, and commitment, you can heal your relationship and yourself.

Life can be difficult. Talking with a counsellor can help you draw perspectives, skills and strategies from within yourself and to find in yourself sources of empowerment you were not aware you had to meet life's challenges and grow. 'Counselling Changes Lives' (BACP). When you invite a counselling relationship into your life, you and your counsellor create together a very safe space, completely of your own, where you can explore in total confidence the distress and vulnerability that are leading you to seek out counselling now, at a level which you perhaps could not share or bring to even those who are closest to you.

I love working with people who are openminded and honest and looking to improve their lives and explore some of their blocks. I have a lot of experience working with depression, anxiety, abuse, addiction and low self esteem. If you aren't happy with yourself or your life, I would love to find out why and help you to explore ways of making positive changes. I have transformed my life in a positive way so I speak from experience when I say radical transformation is possible if you are open to it. I offer a safe, non-judgemental space to talk about the things that are really important to you.

Divorce Counsellors

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
