Hi, my name is Nicola. Perhaps you are looking for a counsellor because you have been feeling unable to cope. Maybe you are experiencing loss, anxiety , depression, or you're feeling stuck or in crisis. Perhaps you would simply like someone to talk to who will listen and not judge. It can feel hard to manage on your own, but you don't have to. Counselling can support you to explore any difficulties you are facing with someone you trust and with whom you feel safe. I offer a warm and confidential space where you can feel heard and never judged, where a smile will always meet you and where you can bring whatever is on your mind.

My main areas of experience are in addiction, Trauma, destructive relationships, anxiety , low self esteem and lack of meaning.
I became a therapist after navigating my own journey with what life had presented me with and the likely hood is I've been somewhere similar to where you are right now and I've come out the other side. Together we can explore what is happening with you and in your life that has left you feeling anxious, depressed, sad, angry, low in self-esteem, empty or distressed. I will not only work with you on how and why you are suffering but also find with you ways to move past your struggles. I am not a therapist that sits back, Im here to sort things out with you.

I have helped many people cope with stress, overcome anxiety , beat depression and reduce their drinking before it took over their lives completely.
Right now you might find it almost impossible to believe life will work out for the best. Sometimes change just comes along but most of the time it's up to us to get started. That's tough at the best of times. Maybe staying as you are just seems easier or, perhaps, you've now reached a point where you want to change but don't know how to go about it. Starting out can seem daunting, a risk even. That's where therapy comes in.

If you are experiencing distressing symptoms in relation to ANY anxiety disorder - including phobias, PTSD, OCD and you want to make changes that liberate you so that you you can live the life that you would prefer then I can help. Sessions tend to last longer than the traditional hour (or in some cases 50 minutes) as I prefer to work without the time constraint and to give value for money.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
