I am a therapist, based in Cambridge, providing therapy online for clients struggling with overwhelming feelings of anxiety, low self-esteem and, as a member of the LGBTQI+ community, I am LGBTQI+ affirmative. I have experienced anxiety, overwhelm, and panic attacks in the past. With the help of good therapy, I was able to understand and reduce my anxiety, and to work on building my self-esteem, so that I could enjoy life, make good choices and to finally accept myself.

We all deserve to have a life that we feel secure in and a future that we can look forward to. But in reality there are times when this simply isn't the case. And so we seek therapy. It might be for help with overwhelming feelings of anxiety and depression. Or a little nagging voice at the back of the mind that says that now is the right time to talk to someone.  Or something quite clear and traumatic has happened. Therapy is somewhere you can come to talk, confidentially, about whatever it is that is affecting you.

I believe there are times in all our lives where it is helpful to explore a reoccurring issue or struggle with a neutral person. Someone who is not afraid to talk about difficult topics and someone who's main focus is us. I feel incredibly lucky that on a weekly basis I get to be that neutral person.

There are times when we are overwhelmed by the challenges we face. This might be due to current situations and/or linked to past experiences and/or trauma. It might then lead to getting stuck in this place, finding it difficult to connect to oneself and others and live ones life in a meaningful way. In these situations, it can sometimes be helpful to explore options and ideas with someone outside the situation. One way of getting support along the journey is to engage in psychological therapy. My aim is to provide a safe space, to explore, grow and move in the direction that accords with your values.

This service offers psychological assessment and therapy for children, young people and adults. We currently have availability to see adult clients only. People seek help for a range of reasons including anxiety, low mood, relationship issues, low self esteem or distress following traumatic events. A comprehensive assessment is always undertaken as a first step. This ensures clients have a good understanding of the process of therapy and can discuss in advance what approaches might be most useful for them. I draw on a range of evidence based approaches including EMDR, CBT and systemic practice.

Life can become extremely difficult: things may seem overwhelming and out of control following a recent event or trauma; possibly something from your past has returned to worry you; or you realise that you need to finally tackle something you have been suffering with for a long time; perhaps you need to make an important decision and can’t think how to do so; or maybe you are plagued with anxiety or unhappy but with no clear idea as to why. Talking to someone and being fully listened to, without being judged, can be the start of a process of coming to terms with difficult and traumatic experiences.

Sometimes the meaning of life gets lost. We feel stuck. We go through challenging life events believing we have overcome them but uncomfortable feelings and difficult emotions remain in our bodies. We might experience symptoms of anxiety such as insomnia or aches, depression or PTSD. We profoundly suffer and we don’t know what to do to change this. As a consequence, at home, at work or in relationships, life feel like a struggle and isn't pleasurable anymore.

I offer an alternative form of therapy via the process of collaborative therapeutic song-writing. Music is universal, and has the power to touch all of us in a deep way. It can be a very powerful medium for anyone struggling in their life and looking for meaning and healing. You may come to me if conventional psychotherapy is not what you are looking for right now, and you would like an alternative, creative way of receiving support. You might be a musician already, or simply have a curiosity to explore what music and song-writing have to offer for you.

Life can be difficult. Talking with a counsellor can help you draw perspectives, skills and strategies from within yourself and to find in yourself sources of empowerment you were not aware you had to meet life's challenges and grow. 'Counselling Changes Lives' (BACP). When you invite a counselling relationship into your life, you and your counsellor create together a very safe space, completely of your own, where you can explore in total confidence the distress and vulnerability that are leading you to seek out counselling now, at a level which you perhaps could not share or bring to even those who are closest to you.

My aim is simple: to help people who need some support in life. I will listen to whatever you need to share, however difficult the subject matter may be. If you can’t find the words to express the way you feel, I will help you to discover a way to bring out those emotions. I work collaboratively with you and I sincerely believe people can gain so much more by working together on a problem. I will definitely help you to understand yourself better. I firmly believe that increasing your self-knowledge will lead to greater potential for an improved quality of life. I aim to help you fulfil your personal goals whatever they may be.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
