Are you facing challenges in your life that feel overwhelming? Would you like to change how things are, or gain a better understanding of what is going on for you? Perhaps what you are experiencing is due to a relationship, something to do with your job or studies, a bereavement or other loss, or something less definable - perhaps just a sense that something is not right for you. Maybe it is connected to neuro-diversity, low self esteem, depression or anxiety. Whatever your difficulty is, and no matter how big or small it seems to be, by looking for therapy, you are taking a positive step in your life.

Occasionally it helps to review and reflect on life's pathway. It can be hard to do this by ourselves, our friends and family may feel too close to confide in. It can be helpful to explore our feelings and emotions in a safe, non-judgmental environment, I can provide this in a relaxing, quiet therapeutic space in Devizes. I have 20 years’ counselling experience with a deep interest in working with; bereavement and loss; with military families, veterans and others who experience PTSD; I work in an integrated style with a special interest in Compassion Focused Therapy.

Hi, I’m a HCPC-registered clinical psychologist in Bristol. I believe therapy is about helping break free from stuck patterns using compassion and acceptance. I work with adults who feel overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck, adjusting to health and life changes or coping with confidence. I often work with people to understand why it makes sense that their brain works in the way it does, and use your goals to tailor your therapy experience. I offer a safe, collaborative space to understand what’s keeping you feeling this way, and to build practical strategies that really work in your life. I work in-person in Bristol (BS2) and online.

You might be trying to hold everything together, or dealing with big life changes like a recent cancer diagnosis, ADHD, anxiety, or trauma, and simply trying to get through each day.
You thought things would feel easier by the time you reached this age. Maybe life wasn't supposed to be this hard. You figured you'd feel more settled, more confident, more in control. But instead, something just feels… off. You're tired. Anxious. Like you're stuck, and no matter what you do, it's hard to move forward. You know you want more from life, you know you're capable of more, but it's hard to explain. You might feel disconnected from yourself or the people around you. Maybe your relationships are struggling, or you just don’t feel like yourself anymore. You're not alone. I'm here for you if you decide to reach out.

What do most of us desire beneath it all?  To feel good, whole and comfortable within ourselves and in the relationships around us. That state of peaceful being resides within all of us but often past traumas and challenging life experiences have shaped who we have become, influencing the story of who we now think we are.  These beliefs often disconnect us from our true, best selves. Trauma happens, and often feelings of shame result. Living our lives wishing bad events never happened leave us feeling powerless but incorporating our past experiences in a way that does not debilitate, permits us to live with them, not ruled by them.

I work with anyone navigating difficult times – whether you come with a specific issue or feel stuck and overwhelmed. My particular experience is supporting people grieving loss in any form, struggling with addiction, or facing anxiety, relationship difficulties, and low mood. People come because they need a safe, non-judgmental space to be heard. Often they're carrying things they can't talk about elsewhere. I help you move forward by creating a calm space, listening deeply, exploring what's keeping you stuck, and working collaboratively to find approaches that actually work for you. We adjust our work together based on what helps.

Sometimes life becomes overwhelming in ways we never expected. Pain can feel endless, as if it’s never going to ease. When things around us begin to shift, we can find ourselves stuck in a place of hopelessness or helplessness, unsure how to move forward. In those moments, many of us turn inward with harshness. We tell ourselves we shouldn’t feel this way, our emotions are wrong, inconvenient, or too much. We try to keep going, to please others, to hold everything together, and somewhere along the way we lose sight of ourselves. Feelings of stuckness, emptiness, and meaninglessness can quietly take over.

Life can be stressful and full of uncertainty, so as a Counselling Psychologist I will use a variety of theories from my years of training and beyond to treat you as a whole person who is more than just their struggles, insecurities and pain. I am a relatable and down to earth person and my aim is to make you feel safe, listened to, valued and understood so that you can build self-awareness, self-compassion and self-acceptance.

I provide a safe, peaceful environment to explore the many issues clients bring. After you contact me, we will arrange a 50 minute face to face assessment. This gives us both an opportunity to assess if we are a ‘good fit’ and are happy to go ahead and work with each other. We will then find a suitable weekly time slot, and will start the process of weekly therapy, to be held at the same time every week. I am amenable to our sessions occasionally being conducted by video call if, for example, you have a job which requires travel away from the area. However, ideally this shouldn’t happen more than once every few months

I have a particular interest in working with individuals who are experiencing intrusive thoughts and difficult feelings around death (their own or others). This experience is commonly known as death anxiety or thanatophobia. The foundation also specialises in working with people experiencing related difficulties such as being preoccupied by issues of transcience, impermanence, change, ageing and loss. They may also be afflicted by a sense of purposelessness or meaninglessness. People experiencing such difficulties to a significant degree might be said to be experiencing existential or philosophical OCD.

How does cancer affect mental health?
A cancer diagnosis is a major life event that can significantly influence the mental health of any individual. Being diagnosed with cancer often introduces a sense of uncertainty about the future, which can cause clients to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and significant distress. Many cancer patients may also worry about the toll that their diagnosis may have on their family, their physical health, their job, and their financial situation. The compounding of such stressors can also decrease mental health in clients and may lead to additional symptoms that can influence mental health, such as sleeping difficulties or social withdrawal.

What is the best psychological therapy for cancer patients?
The best type of psychological therapy for cancer patients is highly dependent on the needs of the individual. The therapy type that a client benefits from may also depend on what stage of the cancer journey they are in. Recently diagnosed cancer patients, for instance, may benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which can help clients develop skills to manage the emotional distress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Alternatively, cancer patients further along in their journey may benefit from therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or other forms of mindfulness therapy to help manage symptoms or physical pain associated with treatment. Clients may also consider group therapy, which offers cancer patients an opportunity to receive support from other individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Are there any risks or drawbacks in going to therapy while dealing with cancer?
Although attending therapy while dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be helpful, one major concern for cancer patients can be the financial cost of seeking therapy. Many therapists are out-of-network, meaning they do not accept insurance, and thus clients are expected to pay the entirety of the session fee. Since many cancer patients may be out of work as a result of their diagnosis or cancer treatment regimen, the costs of therapy sessions can be substantial. Luckily, many cancer centers and local clinics may offer free or substantially reduced-cost counselling services to cancer patients and their families. In addition, cancer patients may be eligible for grants or other forms of funding from local agencies and nonprofits to seek therapy for their cancer diagnosis. Such opportunities can be very helpful for cancer patients, as they allow clients to obtain the benefits of therapy without the financial strain.

How long does cancer therapy typically last?
The length of cancer therapy depends on the needs of each client. In some cases, cancer patients may only require therapeutic support during the period following their initial diagnosis—to help manage the uncertainty and shock of a cancer diagnosis. In other cases, clients may choose to receive therapy throughout their treatment, and even following, their cancer journey. Pursuing therapy for a longer period of time can help clients develop a deeper relationship with their therapist and provide opportunity to process the challenges presented by cancer treatment, such as physical pain, and challenges associated with cancer survivorship, such as ongoing identity concerns, physical limitations, or relationship challenges.
