We live in a world which throws a lot at us, and expects a lot of us. And, very often, we expect a lot of ourselves too. For many of us, it can help to talk through what we’re dealing with, to help us understand what’s going on and find a way forward. Whether you’re dealing with anger, anxiety, bereavement, depression, identity, loneliness, powerlessness, relationship difficulties, or simply want to talk things through, I offer a confidential, non-judgmental space to explore what you’re feeling, and how you can manage it. We’re all different and we all need to find our own way. I can help you do that.

Trying to resolve the issues troubling you alone can feel overwhelming. Reaching out for help is a proactive first step in starting to feel better. I provide a welcoming, safe, confidential, and non-judgemental space to talk about what is troubling you. It is very natural to feel nervous about coming to counselling for the first time. I understand and never lose sight of this. I offer a complimentary 20-minute introductory telephone consultation. Some new clients prefer to book their first appointment without a call. It about what feels best to you.

How to explain what counselling is... If you're holding a cup of coffee and somebody accidentally bumps into you, you will most likely spill a drop or two, or depending on the bump impact a few spoonfuls or more. If there had been tea or something else in your cup, the result would be the same. Your emotions and feelings are like the coffee, because sometimes when life comes along and shakes you (which will happen to us all) whatever is inside your cup will spill out. Sometimes life can be easier until you get bumped.....but then you may need somebody to talk to, this is where counselling can help.

I work with people who are needing support to navigate the challenges of life. This might mean supporting you towards a greater self-understanding or finding more meaning and purpose in life. You may want to feel more confident, calmer or creative, explore your identity or find ways of processing difficult feelings or experiences. I have a conversational approach to therapy which focuses on helping you find a way forward which is meaningful to you. If you prefer a creative approach we can explore feelings and experiences through visualisations, movement, dance, art, story, connecting with nature and 'walk and talk' therapy.

I am a dedicated female-centred therapist, devoted to empowering women to embrace their inherent worth. I firmly believe in the boundless potential and resilience of women and the profound impact of self-awareness on their lives. Remarkable transformations occur when women embark on their healing journey and delve into self-discovery. Whether in person or virtually, I love journeying with women through their growth and self-care and I know that the ripple effects of this journey are significant. I believe that fostering this inclusive and accepting space for individuals encourages collective nurturing also.

Hello, my name is Jo, and I would like to welcome you to Calm Space Counselling. I am passionate about helping people feel the best they possibly can, both about and within themselves. As soulful human beings, our past, present and future relationships, with others and with ourselves, are impacted by people, places, objects and events. Sometimes these are beautiful and inspiring, but often they can be difficult and traumatic. You may feel as if your life is on a loop, repeating old habits and behaviours in different situations. With care and empathy, I will support you as we explore these feelings and behaviours together.

At times, we can feel overwhelmed by the events and demands facing us. Life can feel daunting, and we can lose trust in ourselves to find a way forward. We can neglect ourselves and ignore areas of our lives that are painful. We may notice beliefs and habits we are stuck with that are holding us back from living life fully. Psychotherapy can help unravel the patterns we are caught in. Learning to pay attention to ourselves in a supportive space can help us to shift our perspective and find new directions. We can develop a compassionate relationship with ourselves that will help generate new energy to overcome our obstacles.

I believe that people are endlessly creative... Despite damaging childhoods, difficult life experiences, the most painful losses and challenges we face living in an increasingly complex world, we are all capable of turning our lives around for the better. With courage and the right kind of help, our natural inborn capacity for growth is brought to light. The process of making life better is just as worthwhile as the outcome. Somehow the whole process of confronting and solving the apparently insurmountable problems that bring us to therapy can also bring renewed meaning and poignancy into our lives.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
