Hi, my name is Liz, and I am a counsellor based in Buxton. I see clients face-to-face in Buxton and also offer online sessions for those who prefer the flexibility of therapy at home. I support people in understanding anxiety, not by fighting against it, but by learning what it’s trying to protect. Helping to gain a deeper understanding of your triggers, so they feel less overwhelming, and how to respond in ways that feel calmer, steadier, and more in control.

Life is complex and ever-changing. It can leave you feeling unsatisfied or in distress without really knowing why. You may have turned to ways of coping that you would like to change or explore. Therapy provides a safe space for you to unravel your thoughts and make sense of your world. I believe you are the expert of your experience; I will listen and assist you in exploring and understanding your world, to find a way back to your innate healed self. I draw on a range of psychological theories, nature and spirituality to guide therapy in a way that honours the uniqueness of each human being.

I am a High Peak based Art Psychotherapist. I work with children, young people and adults. I also offer therapy to Art Psychotherapy trainees. I believe that we all have the capacity to thrive if we are given the right conditions to do so. Beginning therapy can be a daunting experience, and so my aim is to always ensure to put you at ease, and that whatever you bring to therapy is done so at your pace and in a way that feels right for you. Creativity is a wonderful way to explore your feelings and thoughts, and you don't even have to be good at art. Just a willingness to see where it can take you and to trust the process.

Sometimes the difficulties you have in the present are influenced by how things have been for you in the past. How you have coped with the tough experiences, the beliefs you have developed about yourself and the world, your habitual responses. You want to improve things for yourself but you can't see a way through. Maybe you have tried other ways of getting better, maybe with some success, but the underlying problems just turn up in different ways. You are here because you know that you are not out of options. Psychotherapy has helped many people like you. And with me, you are in a safe pair of hands. EMDR is an option for you too.

Hi, I'm Maria. Are you curious about why you feel or act the way you do? Are you open to exploring the deeper layers of your emotions and experiences with a desire to understand yourself more even if nothing feels 'wrong' on the surface? I can support you to reflect on your past, notice patterns in your relationships, and take time to understand yourself more fully. You don’t need to know anything about therapy—just be open, patient, and interested in creating meaningful, lasting change from the inside out.

How to explain what counselling is... If you're holding a cup of coffee and somebody accidentally bumps into you, you will most likely spill a drop or two, or depending on the bump impact a few spoonfuls or more. If there had been tea or something else in your cup, the result would be the same. Your emotions and feelings are like the coffee, because sometimes when life comes along and shakes you (which will happen to us all) whatever is inside your cup will spill out. Sometimes life can be easier until you get bumped.....but then you may need somebody to talk to, this is where counselling can help.

Hello, & thank you for reading. I'm glad you're here. You may long for closeness but find relationships complicated, painful, or overwhelming. Perhaps you’ve learned to keep parts of yourself hidden, or you’ve felt “too much” or “not enough” for others. You might also notice how past experiences linger in the present, affecting how safe you feel with people, with your own body, or even with life itself. If you’re neurodivergent, you may carry the added weight of not feeling fully understood in the world, or of needing to navigate sensory and social landscapes that others take for granted.

You may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or stuck, even if you can’t fully explain why. Perhaps work, relationships, or life changes have left you questioning yourself, your choices, or your sense of direction. I work with adults and couples who want to understand what’s happening beneath the surface and make meaningful, lasting change, rather than relying on quick fixes or coping strategies that don’t hold. Therapy with me offers space to slow down, think clearly, and explore patterns that may be keeping you stuck, so you can move forward with greater confidence and agency.

Women's Issues Counsellors
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
