The main issues I can help with are disordered eating; relationship and sexual issues; dealing with stressful conditions at work; living with life-changing illness; bereavement, including bereavement by suicide; difficulties with self-esteem, depression and anxiety; survival of trauma and adverse childhood experiences.
Sometimes the difficulties you have in the present are influenced by how things have been for you in the past. How you have coped with the tough experiences, the beliefs you have developed about yourself and the world, your habitual responses. You want to improve things for yourself but you can't see a way through. Maybe you have tried other ways of getting better, maybe with some success, but the underlying problems just turn up in different ways. You are here because you know that you are not out of options. Psychotherapy has helped many people like you. And with me, you are in a safe pair of hands. EMDR is an option for you too.

I offer One to one Counselling for- Adult trauma, Addiction, Anxiety, Depression, Life transition and Stress.
How to explain what counselling is... If you're holding a cup of coffee and somebody accidentally bumps into you, you will most likely spill a drop or two, or depending on the bump impact a few spoonfuls or more. If there had been tea or something else in your cup, the result would be the same. Your emotions and feelings are like the coffee, because sometimes when life comes along and shakes you (which will happen to us all) whatever is inside your cup will spill out. Sometimes life can be easier until you get bumped.....but then you may need somebody to talk to, this is where counselling can help.

I believe in the potential of all individuals. It is why I do what I do. When we experience stressful times in life, it can be difficult to see our own strength, resilience and resourcefulness. I can help you to reconnect with these skills, empowering you to discover your own coping strategies which will serve you now and in the future. I have a compassionate and warm approach. I will validate your feelings and will listen with empathy and without judgment.

Are you a highly sensitive woman who often feels overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected from yourself? Perhaps you're the one who holds it all together - for your family, clients, or colleagues - yet inside, you're exhausted, overthinking, and unsure how to slow down. You might say yes when you want to say no, struggle to rest without guilt, or find yourself numbing with food, alcohol, or endless doing. If you’re longing for calm, clarity, and space to just be, I can help.

Hello, I'm Libby and I am a person-centred psychotherapist based in the Peak District near Bakewell. My particular passion is working with people coping, adapting and living with chronic illness; having my own long-term illnesses has made me aware of the limitations of support available. I work with bereavement, carers and people with terminal illnesses, with my experience coming from volunteer work at Ashgate Hospice, where I helped individuals with their unique experiences around death and loss. I also work with clients who have experienced trauma and abuse, helping them to process their experiences and rebuild their lives.

Do you feel empty behind the face you show to the world? Do you struggle to identify what you want and need? If someone asks for your opinion, do you often think “I don’t know”? Perhaps it’s difficult to make decisions. Or you might compare yourself to others, but always come up short. Perhaps it feels as though the real you has got lost somewhere along the way. You might be feeling this way after a change in life circumstances. Or perhaps you’ve felt this way since an early age.

For Men Navigating Life's Challenges - Are you feeling stuck, stressed, or struggling to find your way? As men, we're often expected to "power through" or "tough it out" when life gets difficult. Many of us reach a point where we realize that navigating these challenges alone doesn't have to be the only option. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, burnout, relationship issues, or just that nagging feeling that something's missing, I get it. As a male therapist, I understand the unique pressures men face today – because I've faced them too.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
