Therapy brings clarity, helping you make effective decisions and positive changes in thoughts, attitudes, and behaviours. It's not about advice giving but creating space to talk, explore, and reach your own realisations. The goal is to feel more equipped to make choices and move forward with confidence and wellbeing. Hypnotherapy & mindfulness can be introduced as a type of complementary therapy—hypnosis promotes focus and openness to positive change, while mindfulness helps keep you grounded in the present.

I take an affirming approach to working with clients who are (or want to explore potentially being) queer, trans, neurodivergent, or nonmonogamous - that means that I don't believe that being neurotypical is inherently superior to being neurodivergent, or that being cisgender is inherently preferable to being transgender, and so on.
If you're reading this, you're probably struggling with something and don't feel like you can talk to anyone about it. I've been there, it's rough. But in reading this listing, you’ve just taken the first step towards seeing if this is for you - that’s a big thing in and of itself. Now that you’ve done it and you’re here, why not take the plunge and get in touch with me?

I work with a wide range of people and you are welcome to get in touch if my profile resonates with you. Often, I work with activists, the LGBTQIA+ community, kinky people, poly people, neurodiverse people, outsiders and edge-walkers (and more).

I’m Matt, I’m a qualified therapist and counsellor. I’m a real human and will bring my warmth, humour, care, honesty and acceptance to our sessions. I am specialised in the person-centred approach, which puts our relationship at the centre of therapy. We will work together to understand you, to help you process and to help you feel better within yourself. Who you choose as your therapist is a really personal choice. Probably the most important aspect of therapy is a good relationship between the therapist and the client. Really it’s about who you like, who you connect with and crucially who you feel that you can trust.

Do you feel the need for a change but the thought of it makes you anxious? Do people around you seem not to be able to see who you truly are? Are you questioning your sexuality or gender? Does it feel as if you constantly need to justify yourself? As a member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I’m familiar with the struggles around sexuality and/or gender. If this is something you’re facing, I can walk the path of self-acceptance with you over rough or smooth terrains.

Are you struggling with feeling anxious, low or depressed, uncertain or disconnected? All around us people are feeling anxious, overwhelmed and uncertain about how they are supposed to manage their relationships, careers and their lives. You are not alone. Talking about it can really help but perhaps the people you usually talk to are struggling with their own problems or don’t know how to help. I’ve spent 30 years as a therapist listening and helping people find more peace, clarity and joy in life.

Transgender Counsellors
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognise a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognise a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
