I am a qualified, integrative counsellor with experience of working with both adults and young people over the age of 18. I also work with organizations and EAP schemes, and happily accept new enquiries from these. Experiencing difficulties in life, while this may be inevitable, can be incredibly painful and isolating. My aim within my practice is to foster a safe, non-judgmental, and empathic environment, where you can freely explore your concerns and worries. Taking that first step in counselling and finding the right therapist can be a daunting prospect, so I will endeavour to make sure that you feel as comfortable as possible.

Communication difficulties and breakdowns in our relationships can occur for many different reasons. When they occur, partners, children or indeed the family or even friends might be affected and become involved in some way, and this has a knock-on effect on us as well as others. Changes in family life, whether in somebody’s physical health, their relationships, or in children's behaviour, can be effectively addressed in family therapy. I adopt a non-blaming, collaborative approach to working with clients to find ways of moving forwards in life when feeling stuck. Children and adults are included, either together or individually.

Anxiety, depression, trauma, menopause – whatever has brought you here today - I understand because I’ve been where you are right now. What you’re looking for is a way out of the dark space you’re in; to be guided by someone who knows the way; someone who has been there themself. Nothing gives me more joy than guiding people along a path that has been trodden by not just me, but many others just like you!
I offer a warm and friendly welcome, either in our lovely space here in the Suffolk countryside - where the kettle is always on! Or from the comfort of your own home via Zoom.

I came to counselling later in life, after running my own successful business in the hospitality and events industry. I have a lot of experience in dealing with different people and situations, and I understand the pressures and challenges of working in a demanding and competitive field. I have also faced my own struggles with complicated family issues growing up, identity and self worth. These experiences have shaped me as a person and as a therapist, and they help me to connect with a diverse range of clients.

I have worked with many individuals over the last 24 years with a wide range of problems. My work tends to suit people who are naturally questioning and curious: about life, about themselves, and others. I am happy to work in a focused short term way through to longer term therapy. I work in an integrative way, involving ideas from different approaches, and I have an interest in the existential dimensions of therapy: meaning and purpose, anxiety and uncertainty, values, freedom and responsibility and the idea of authenticity. My experience is in helping individuals find and create their own ways forward.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.
How is counselling for elderly different from counselling for other age groups?
In general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.
How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.
What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counsellors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counsellors specialising in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counsellors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
