They often come because they don't feel heard in their day-to-day life, or need somewhere to explore emotions without fear of reactions or feelings of guilt.
I help clients by offering a trusting, safe non-judgmental platform wherein I work collaboratively with them, human to human, supporting them in exploring what makes them who they are, identifying their needs, becoming more attuned to their emotions and offering them the tools to better cope when life inevitably throws a curve ball as it so often does.

I work in an integrative way, involving ideas from different approaches, and I have an interest in the existential dimensions of therapy: meaning and purpose, anxiety and uncertainty, values, freedom and responsibility and the idea of authenticity.
I always work in a way that respects an individual's values and beliefs; I do not put pressure on others to do, say, or be, anything in particular. While I encourage people to take the lead in therapy I would describe myself as actively involved in the therapeutic process; I work alongside people and always in reference to their own goals and understanding.

EMDR is also very effective with General Anxiety, Panic attacks, Depression, Stress, Phobias, Sleep problems, Chronic pain, Body dysmorphic disorder, Medically unexplained symptoms, Addictions, Low self esteem, Performance anxiety and Attachment disorders.
I offer EMDR and EMDR Intensives, CBT and Couples Counselling therapy and the aim is to help you to regain a sense of wellbeing and enjoyment in your life. During the initial assessment we will work together to understand your main problems, what is keeping you 'stuck' and then agree on an individualised treatment plan to help you move forward with clear treatment goals. CBT is an effective treatment that can help you in the here and now and EMDR is useful for getting to the roots of the problem. I find that both work well, in different ways to bring about an improvement in emotional and physical health.

Hi, my name is Alec, and it is a pleasure to meet you. I understand that seeking counselling or therapy can be a deeply personal experience and it can be difficult to take that first step. For this reason, I strive to offer clients a safe, friendly, and compassionate space to explore their difficulties while they learn about themselves and find healthier alternative ways to live their lives. I do not give advice and fully believe you are the expert on how to be you. However, no matter what your difficulty maybe I can offer you empathy, understanding and support as we work together. If you are seeking change, therapy may be helpful.

I work with adults who may be feeling anxious, low in mood or confidence, overwhelmed, or unsure of themselves.
Perhaps it’s hard to say no, to prioritise yourself, or to resist coping strategies that no longer help. I start by getting to know you and offering a steady, reliable presence. As trust builds, I may reflect patterns, helping you see yourself with fresh eyes. At times, this can include gentle challenge, always with care and at a pace that works for you.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
