You might be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or like you’ve lost your way—but you don’t always know why, or how to make it stop. Maybe you've tried talking to friends, your parents, school or distracting yourself, but nothing really seems to help for long. You just want to feel better—to feel like you again. As a counsellor, I’m here to walk alongside you at your pace. Whether you're carrying past pain, navigating a stressful change, or feeling stuck in emotion you can't name, therapy can be the space where it starts to make sense.

Life can become too much sometimes. Maybe you’ve tried to carry on as normal, pushing things down or telling yourself “others have it worse.” But the truth is, if something is hurting you, it matters. I work with people who want to understand themselves better, especially how their early life or relationships have shaped how they show up in the world today. Perhaps you’ve reached a point where you’re asking, “Why do I feel like this?” or “Why does it keep happening?”—and you’re ready to find out.

I often use elements of Neuroscience and Somatic work too, to help with understanding that the mind and body cannot be separated.
Psychodynamic counselling or psychotherapy is effective in allowing you to make positive changes to your life, so you can deal with any overwhelming issues that are causing you emotional pain, unhappiness, or stress now. Perhaps you're feeling trapped or blocked by the past, feeling stuck in survival mode with old patterns that keep resurfacing. Maybe you are recently grieving from a loss of some kind, or can’t make sense of a general flatness or despair with feelings of depression, and anxiety. I provide a non-judgemental, inclusive space to explore these difficult parts, thoughts and feelings to gain greater understanding.

You may feel stuck in patterns that keep repeating in your relationships, whether that’s people-pleasing, overthinking, or the same conflicts playing out again and again. Relationships can feel confusing, painful, or distant, leaving you feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or not quite “enough.” I work with individuals and couples to understand and break free from these patterns, helping you feel more secure, respond differently, and build more connected, fulfilling relationships.

Hi there, I'm Richard, an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist. I blend different therapeutic approaches to suit your needs, combining techniques from person-centred, attachment-based, and cognitive-behavioural therapy with trauma-informed soothing and mindfulness to help heal trauma. Many of us experience anxiety, difficult relationships, self-doubt, or feeling overwhelmed without fully understanding why. It's a completely natural part of being human. Perhaps you notice patterns but wonder where they began. Understanding can help us heal emotional pain, gain confidence and reconnect to our life in a healthy, meaningful way

What brings you to this search today? A current issue? At the surface maybe yes, but at a deeper level, maybe there's more. What might you be really seeking? Often life seems to keep throwing us challenges, situations that we don't want or like. Situations that are painful and even shameful. We might look at this, 'zoomed in' and try to manage or firefight, which can work in the short term. But there is another way if we zoom out a little and hold both views. What is the lesson I need to learn from this situation? What work might I need to do on myself to finally move forward? What gift might this painful situation have to offer?

You're holding everything together — work, relationships, responsibilities — and doing it well enough that nobody would guess the effort it actually takes. But privately something won't shift. The anxiety that appears for no obvious reason. The relationships that follow the same exhausting patterns. The flatness that success hasn't touched. You've probably tried to address it. Got some tools, felt better for a while. But something underneath keeps reasserting itself — and you're right that it does. I've spent 30 years helping people understand what's actually driving their experience, not just manage the symptoms.

Somatic Counsellors
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
