Bereavement, and suicide.
Are you a member of the LGBTQI+ community? Are you exploring the transition process? Coming out to loved ones? Experiencing hatred, social stigma or body dysmorphia? Struggling to understand your identity, pronouns or where you 'fit'? Are you navigating your unique relationship and setting boundaries? Counselling can help you to explore your thoughts on these matters. For men to reach out and express how they feel is often very hard, they fear stigma, worry of being judged and feeling of not being 'like a man' you are not alone in these feelings and counselling can offer that safe space to express your feelings without judgement

We may be trying to come to terms with loss or abuse.
I often use ACT in my practice which is a type of CBT. We'll start by exploring the issues that have brought you to therapy and then decide the most appropriate ways to help you make progress. With ACT we can look at ways in which you can "unhook" from difficult thoughts and feelings that are holding you back, and start making positive changes in your life.

I work with general anxieties, depression, bereavement, and much more.
People are often unsure if counselling is for them. My opinion is if something is causing you worry, anxiety or you are not sure what to do, or have depressing, counselling can help. By talking through your issues you gain new perspectives. Some people find coming for their first counselling session really difficult, because they don't know what to expect. The first session is about you meeting the counsellor and discussing what is troubling you. First sessions are longer than normal at Colette Counselling, this give us plenty of time to talk about the therapy process and your issues and how therapy can be of help to you.

There is so much focus these days on "What's wrong with you" using terms such as 'depression', 'anxiety', 'disorder', rather than talking about "What happened to you?" Your mental health is much more than just a label or a diagnosis and therapy offers so much more than just talking. It can give you new understanding, new insights, a different perspective, clarity about a problem and the way forward. It can teach you skills to live your life better, teach you more healthy coping strategies or simply give you the space and time for self reflection and a place to find peace of mind.

Many of my clients grew up feeling unseen or unheard — carrying childhood wounds, family dysfunction, or old patterns that still shape their lives today. Whatever issue has brought you to search for a therapist, I believe the heart of therapy is the relationship itself. When you feel truly seen and accepted, something shifts — old patterns soften, trust grows, and real change becomes possible.

Sometimes the issues we face paralyse us with anxieties. Sometimes we have no one in our lives who are able to help or we may not want to burden others. It’s difficult to trust people with our innermost worries, feelings and thoughts. Yet we all need help to get through difficult periods in our lives. It may be that friends and family tell us to stop dwelling on the past or try and move on. But no matter how hard we try, the past hangs around to haunt us or we have no words to describe what we feel. Additionally, we may wish to explore our experience for personal or professional reasons.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
