Neuro-affirming counselling for ADHD, autistic, and overwhelmed adults. You may be feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, or disconnected after years of masking, self-doubt, or pushing yourself to cope without really understanding why it feels so hard. Many people come to therapy feeling this way — questioning themselves and wondering why they don’t seem to fit. If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or tired of coping alone, you don’t have to work this out by yourself. Therapy can offer a space to feel understood and supported.

When life gets difficult, the most courageous thing we can do for ourselves, is to reach out for help. Counselling is for anybody making their journey through the challenges of life. You might feel overwhelmed or just a little bit ‘stuck.’ Day-to-day tasks might be a struggle. You might have lost someone – recently or in the past. There might be changes in your life or difficult decisions to be made. Perhaps a past event keeps popping up, influencing the present more than you would like? Counselling can help.

A strong relationship is, I believe, what makes therapy, therapeutic. In other words, therapy is about building a trusting and communicative, working relationship. Part of my role is to offer the conditions; empathy, acceptance and genuineness which are at the root of cultivating therapeutic alliance. By offering these conditions, I will meet you as a whole person and remain open and curious to what you feel you want to bring to the session. I do not perceive myself as the expert of your life, you are. I will encounter you in the sessions, holding my understanding that you are of inherent worth and value.

Hi! My name is Maria Goga and I am a London based therapist. I work in an integrative way with a focus on the therapeutic relationship. My main methods are CBT, the person-centred approach, attachment theory, Gestalt and transactional analysis. I also have a background in the performing arts and use this experience in my therapeutic practice - I am very good at putting myself in someone else's shoes in a non-judgemental way. I believe unconditional positive regard and empathy are some of the most valuable things we can receive from another person, so offering that to my clients is vital to my work.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
