Marriage Counselling in Buckingham
I help adults and couples overcome depression, anxiety, low self esteem, attachment/relationship challenges using evidence-based approaches like person-centered therapy, attachment theory, trauma informed practice, transactional analysis and psychodynamic underpinning.
I’m Katie Ginger, an MBACP‑accredited psychotherapist based in Buckingham (MK18). I offer trauma‑informed, relational therapy for adults facing childhood neglect and abuse, parental separation, relationship difficulties, anxiety and life transitions. My person‑centred, attachment‑informed approach creates a safe, non‑judgemental space where we gently map how early experiences shape current feelings and relationships. Therapy is collaborative and practical: we explore emotional patterns, build secure ways of relating, and use focused tools (emotion‑focused and brief CBT techniques) to help you manage symptoms and reclaim agency.

I am trained to and accredited to work with children, couples, individuals and family's.
Often the beginning of therapy is the sharing of stories, about life and life experience. I listen exceptionally carefully to this, to help you use the space to begin to make sense of what has happened and how you want to view what has happened.
Most client appreciate being listened to, although this can take time to feel okay. Also in those first few sessions client value the sense of containment and safety I offer, as the work progresses this sense of safety is often what helps us to feel safe to explore difference and what that might mean for our relationships.

I have also trained as a Child and Family Mediator, which informs my work with couples and families, particularly those navigating separation and co-parenting arrangements.
A significant part of my practice is couples work. Most couples arrive for therapy certain that the other person is the problem. What usually emerges over time is a shared dynamic, patterns that both people are contributing to. When that becomes conscious, couples can begin to work with each other rather than against each other.

Choosing a counsellor is a daunting task. Most of us use the same language to describe what we do and how we do it, making it even harder to decide. I have been there, and I learnt that choosing a few counsellors to have an initial meeting with, is a good place to start. This way, you get a flavour of how your work with that person will look like. I invite you to book a free exploratory session with me and decide afterwards if we are a good fit.

Marriage Counselling
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
