I work a lot with OCD, using CBT with ERP.
I specialise in working with children, young people and young adults experiencing anxiety and/or trauma. I support parents and carers alongside work with their child. I work creatively and playfully when appropriate and if welcomed. I feel it is important to get to know each person as a unique individual and build on their strengths in our work together. I work integratively, drawing upon several therapeutic models including CBT and EMDR, depending on what feels appropriate. My team can also offer support with needs including long-term health conditions (diabetes, CFS/ME, asthma), psychosis, self-esteem and anxiety (see my website).

Many of the individuals I see are capable, high-functioning people experiencing persistent difficulties with focus, anxiety, burnout, or a sense that things are not working as expected. Some are exploring possible ADHD or Autism Spectrum Condition, while others seek clarity around more complex mental health concerns. What they share is a need for a clear, structured understanding of their presentation and a path forward.

My work in specialist NHS services has led to expertise in treating anxiety, and I have helped many people overcome their struggles with OCD, health anxiety, emetophobia, BDD, panic, social anxiety, specific phobias, and the effects of trauma.
I offer evidence based CBT sessions online via Microsoft Teams. In person sessions may also be possible in St Albans. Sessions will initially focus on together developing a shared understanding of your problems, what led to them and what's keeping them going, so we can then focus on effectively helping you challenge and overcome them and achieve your goals.

I have worked in a variety of NHS settings including; The National and Specialist Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Service for Children and Young People, HIV and Sexual Health and Infant and Maternal Mental Health.
I am an experienced Chartered Clinical Psychologist trained in a variety of therapeutic models and approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming (EMDR). My therapeutic style is integrative which means I use a range of therapeutic approaches depending on client needs and preferences, so I tend not to stick rigidly to a one size fits all way of working. This allows me to be flexible and client-centred no matter who I am working with.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
