I work with clients experiencing sight loss, as well as those facing emotional or life challenges that feel overwhelming, confusing, or difficult to manage alone. People often come to me when they are struggling with anxiety, low mood, bereavement, relationship difficulties, family issues, or significant life changes. Some know exactly what they are dealing with, while others simply have a sense that something does not feel right. I offer a warm, supportive space where we can explore what is going on together and gently move towards greater understanding, stability, and resilience.

Do you want to be more present, authentic, and connected in your relationships? Are You Worrying that you're messing up your relationships? Noticing that your relationships elicit surprisingly strong feelings? Struggling with low self-esteem or feeling 'not enough? Coping with being overwhelmed by engaging in unhelpful behaviours? Feeling that you've tried everything; worried that nothing will work? You might think that you just have to learn to communicate better or be less 'this way and more that way'. You convince yourself that you should be able to stay connected by sheer will and behavior change. That's not how it Works...

If you’ve been carrying too much for too long, feeling burnt out, overlooked or stuck in patterns you can’t quite shift, you’re not alone. Maybe you’re the one who holds everything together, the reliable one who keeps going even when something inside feels tired or overwhelmed. You might find yourself saying “yes” when you want to say “no”, replaying conversations, feeling guilty for resting, or sensing that something in you is asking for more space, clarity or ease.

I offer a warm, steady space for adults who are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, burnt out, or weighed down by low mood. These feelings often make sense in the context of current stress, but they can also be rooted in earlier experiences. When early life was unpredictable or unsafe, it can leave lasting impressions that show up in adulthood as anxiety, people‑pleasing, self‑criticism, difficulty setting boundaries, or a sense of being “too much” or “not enough”. These early or later experiences can also lead to PTSD‑related symptoms such as feeling on edge, easily triggered, or struggling with intrusive memories.

Hello, my name is Bernadette and I’m a trauma informed integrative therapist. I know that it’s sometimes difficult to reach out for help. Counselling is a way to explore things which can be painful or difficult to share and this can help ease their impact and build new understanding and possibilities. My practice is warm and non-judgemental and your trust and sense of safety will be at the heart of our work together, as you better understand recurring behaviours, thoughts and feelings or deal with the challenges that life has thrown at you. I create a space where people feel seen, heard and validated.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
