You may be considering psychotherapy for a specific concern, or 'symptom', that you would like to address (e.g. anxiety,
depression
, relationship difficulties, etc.). Or you may have a specific question, or life transition, that needs attention. You may find you're repeating the same 'patterns' over and again. It may be that you have a general sense of uneasiness, meaninglessness, or a lack of playfulness in life. Or perhaps you want to get to know yourself more deeply and experience life more fully. Of course, you may also feel unsure about why exactly you'd like to talk to a psychotherapist, but still want to.

People usually seek therapy because they have reached a crisis point in their life and are struggling to cope alone. This can lead to feeling stuck or creating unhelpful behaviour patterns to cope which present them from living life to their full potential. We often feel confused, anxious,
depressed
, emotionally numb or trapped in our past without clear goals in life or clear identity. I can offer you a safe space to explore better internal understanding which promotes self awareness, personal growth and inner peace which enables you to feel full of hope and clarity to achieve personal success.

My approach to therapy holds to the understanding that peoples experiences make sense within the framework of their own lives: whether those be experiences of anxiety,
depression
, panic or simply feeling sad, all are meaningful reflections of what that person has been through, what they're going through now and what they value and care about.
I specialise in working with people who are experiencing a loss of meaning in their lives and may be questioning their own sense of direction and identity; often characterised by such beliefs as 'I don't recognise myself anymore' or 'I don't like the person I've become'. Likewise I have a great deal of experience working with people who have come to question their ability to cope, persevere or succeed; often expressed as deep feelings of hopelessness or helplessness and beliefs such as 'I'm know deep down I'm not good enough’ or 'there's just no way I can get through this'

We're going to find you a way through
depression
, anxiety disorders & stress.
I am an integrative transpersonal counsellor. The unique element of this counselling is that we will encompass mind, body and spirit in our work together, in a holistic way. It’s a talking therapy but we can also use experiential exercises, visualisation and guided meditation. I sometimes use art and other creative techniques within therapy, which can help us access the parts of ourselves that talking alone may not reach. Most importantly, I offer you a safe, warm, empathetic & non-judgmental space in which to talk, to be heard and to be helped. Before training as a therapist, I worked in the City as a banker and lawyer.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
