Feeling overwhelmed and anxious? Waking in the middle of the night, or struggling to get to sleep? Endless racing thoughts? Feeling like you can't breathe? Doubting yourself? Finding it hard to feel motivated? It feels like uncertainty and anxiety are unavoidable at the moment. This impacts our mood and mental health. New, troubling feelings and experiences may have been triggered, you may have been struggling for a while, or old problems may have resurfaced. Whatever the case, therapy can provide a space to reflect, talk and make sense of the difficulties you are facing.

Taking the first step towards therapy — whether individually or as a couple — can feel daunting. I offer a warm, confidential and emotionally safe space where you can speak openly and be met with care, respect and understanding. Our work will always be guided by your needs, your pace and your goals. I work inclusively with all identities, including LGBTQIA+ identities, racial identity and neurodivergence, offering a neuroaffirmative, non-judgemental approach which honours who you are with someone who understands where you are starting from.

Hi, I am a registered psychologist with over 25years of experience. I work with individuals and couples, experiencing a range of issues, both in person and online. I use different forms of therapy to provide support with the difficulties you are experiencing. Therapies used are based on your needs and the pace that you want to work at. Many of my clients have experienced periods of anxiety or depression. They have experienced challenges in their relationships, work environment, decision-making and have had concerns with mood/mental-health, sex and intimacy; and struggled with sexual identity and racial discrimination, to name a few.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, stuck in painful or confusing patterns, or disconnected from yourself or your partner - whether you’re an individual or a couple, I can help. Many of my clients are high-functioning outwardly but privately struggle with anxiety, low self-esteem, addiction, relationship distress or a persistent sense of loneliness. They seek answers, emotional relief and a deeper understanding of unconscious patterns, unmet needs and core beliefs that hold them back. With this understanding, they create deeper connections, make healthier choices, and build more fulfilling relationships and self esteem.

Bereavement, displacement, loss and trauma are as real to you as you have experienced them. Whilst the thought of counselling can be overwhelming, it is important to allow yourself the permission to literally breathe through events as you talk about them. My Integrative practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy draws from the therapeutic approaches of Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, and Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT). Therefore as you decide on the issues that have brought you to therapy, I will endeavour to offer a safe, confidential and co-created space to help us explore what you share, as you navigate towards wholeness.

You might seem like you’ve got it all together, but inside things feel heavy, stuck or unclear. Maybe you’ve always been the strong one, or you’ve had to shape-shift to fit into spaces that weren’t made with you in mind. You might be feeling disconnected from yourself, questioning your identity, or worn down from carrying too much for too long. You’re looking for space to breathe, reflect and reconnect with who you really are, on your own terms.

I have worked within fostering and adoption, Couple and family Counselling, Bereavement and Youth Counselling. My experience comes from having worked within a variety of family and child settings, a counselling service for young people, a hospice as a bereavement counsellor, and supporting couples in their relationships. I work with families who foster and the secondary trauma that they can also experience. Although I have been trained in the psychodynamic approach, I work using other models to best suit and help individuals explore and become aware of blocks in their lives, working towards making changes.

People struggle to talk frankly about their struggles: personal, relationships and sexual. Although difficulties arising from life transitions, sex and relationships are much more prevalent than most people think, only a few people can still share their struggles with others. Therefore, psychotherapy, psychosexual and relationship therapy offer a unique and confidential space to have those conversations with me, which means you can reach out for support in these areas regardless of your background, sexual preferences and relationship experiences.

Black British Counsellors
As a Black British, why might I wish to see a therapist who is Black British?
Black British clients may seek out Black British therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?
Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with Black British clients?
Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with Black British individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of Black British clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?
It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognising that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?
The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
