Past traumas haunt us, while the unpredictable future worries us -living in the present becomes increasingly more difficult. The constant that we can rely on is change. My aim is to help you take control of the change that you want to make, to claim the life you want for yourself, to find your meaning in your life and live it as fully as possible. I draw from different skills/models acquired over the years during clinical practice and training. My background in performing arts ensures that creative thinking is at the heart of my work. I believe that a holistic approach supports in processing and healing from traumatic events safely.

Your life has taken a direction you did not choose: someone hurt you, or you have developed a physical health problem. You have tried hard to ignore your suffering until you can’t do it anymore. Things that used to be easy now feel impossible. You don’t recognise yourself anymore and you know you cannot carry on like this. This has left you feeling depressed, stressed, angry or even scared. You want to feel less overwhelmed and more in control. You want to go back to the person you once were, or maybe even find out who YOU are. But mostly you just want to be seen and heard and know that someone is on your side.

I'm a humanistic integrative counsellor. I believe that we all experience the world differently and, given the right conditions, we can empower ourselves by finding the answers within. I support people struggling with issues like anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, bereavement, past trauma, trans-generational trauma and feelings of shame or low self-worth. I also have a particular interest in working with those who’ve suffered as a result of their historical boarding school experience.

I can imagine deciding whether you want to have therapy or need therapy is a big question. Perhaps you have suffered a loss, a trauma or are going through a transition of some kind and you want the space and time to work through it. Perhaps this emotional distress whether it be anxiety, low mood, is impacting on your relationships, work and your home life. It could be that you’ve tried many things and for some reason those old ways of coping that have done you well in the past just aren’t working anymore and you feel like you’re struggling. I provide evidence based psychological treatment that might help.

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming. Sometimes we get stuck repeating the same negative patterns of thinking and behaviour. Sometimes we are dealing with traumatic experiences that can feel unbearable. And sometimes we just feel disconnected - unseen and unheard. Recognising when things are not OK and reaching out for support takes real courage. Counselling provides that confidential and safe space where you can explore your innermost thoughts, feelings and behaviours with a warm and empathetic listener who accepts and supports you without judgement.

You may be seeking therapy with a clear focus, such as navigating neurodivergence, relationship difficulties, or experiences around pregnancy, fertility, miscarriage, or loss. You may also be coming with a more general sense of feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or emotionally worn down. I often work with people who think deeply, feel intensely, or have felt misunderstood in previous support. I offer a thoughtful, relational space where we can begin to make sense of what is happening for you, respecting the complexity of your experiences and the meaning they hold for you.

My ideal client may have experienced deep emotional challenges or felt different from others in ways that have shaped how they see themselves and the world. They might feel stuck, overwhelmed by anxiety, shame, or uncertainty, yet have a quiet hope for change. Their struggles often centre on self-acceptance, identity, or connection. Their goal is to move beyond coping, towards feeling safe, understood, and free to live with authenticity, creativity, and self-compassion.

My name is Zara Hickman, founder of 1-voice counselling. I work with adults and young people who feel Anxious, stuck, or worn down by patterns of upset and confusion and don't know how to move forward. People often come to me when coping strategies aren’t enough and they want to understand what’s really going on beneath the surface, rather than just getting through each day. I work in a steady, thoughtful way, helping clients make sense of anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and repeated relational or self-critical patterns. This process is about working together to develop clarity, understanding, and meaningful change that lasts .

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
