Anxiety Counselling in Broadway
Areas of focus include anxiety, ADHD, depression, OCD, phobias, eating disorders, addiction, low self-esteem, relational/ identity issues, and the long aftermath of difficult childhoods.
I am a registered integrative psychotherapist and occupational therapist with over fifteen years across the NHS, The Priory, private practice and corporate settings. I am registered with UKCP/BACP for psychotherapy and HCPC for occupational therapy, and I work with most major UK insurance providers including BUPA, Aviva, Vitality and WPA. I work with adults who have done some of the obvious work and have reached the harder, less obvious layer underneath. People who are not in crisis but are not where they want to be. People who have had insight without it producing change.

It can seem like the hardest thing to do to access counselling, but it can be life changing if you take that first step. You may not be entirely clear on what you want but just have a feeling that things don't feel right and you have decided that you want to understand what, why and how to refocus and live the life you feel is best for you. Or perhaps you are very aware of a struggle with difficulties, which may already be formally diagnosed by another professional, and you want to regain some control instead of feeling that these issues take over. I can support people in achieving their goals wherever they are in their journey.

The intrusive thoughts loop, the compulsions demand attention, or the anxiety sits on your chest like a permanent weight
My approach blends Internal Family Systems, Gestalt therapy, somatic work, and music therapy—which means we might talk about the different parts of yourself that compete for airtime, work with what's happening in your body when words fail, or use sound and creativity when traditional talk therapy hits a wall.

CBT is a well researched and effective treatment for anxiety and depression. I focus on using proven techniques and adapt them to the person's age and individual differences (e.g. neurodiversity - autism, ADHD). While CBT forms the foundation of my work, I balance practical strategies with space for reflection, self understanding and personal growth.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
