I work with adult men and women of all ages anywhere in the UK offering online video and telephone counselling. Quite a lot of us, at some stage in our lives, have been in a situation where we have nobody around us we can talk to. Even though you may have family and friends who care about you, you can still feel alone and isolated or feel that you do not want to ‘bother’ or ‘burden’ them with your feelings.

It can be a great relief to be able to share your worries and stress with someone. We all struggle at times and as much as we would like to talk to our friends or family we feel unable to let them in. Sometimes we feel stuck, alone and not able to find the solution to the problem that's making us unhappy. Being able to talk openly with someone who can support you, without judgement, as you explore your feelings and the circumstances that are causing you stress can make a big difference. You will start to feel in control, see things more clearly and feel more confident to make the changes you want to in your life.

You may be feeling weighed down by sadness or a sense of hopelessness, with little energy or motivation for what lies ahead. You might be experiencing ongoing stress or anxiety, feeling disconnected or alone even when others are around. At times, you may notice irritability or anger showing up in ways that don’t feel like the real you, leaving you feeling frustrated or misunderstood. You don’t have to face these experiences on your own. Counselling can offer a supportive space to explore what is happening for you, understand where these feelings may come from, and find healthier ways to cope and move forward. With the right support

My personal experience has been of depression, anxiety, bereavement and relationship issues as well as a variety of other life challenges.
The changing times we are living in seem to offer uncertainty meaning, for many different reasons and in all sorts of ways, we could find ourselves placed under increasing pressure and faced with unreasonable expectations. Life can suddenly be turned upside down by unexpected life altering events which you may not have the energy to deal with, feel less able to cope and may lead to impacting your relationships with family, peers and also work colleagues. Counselling can help when faced with challenges, overwhelmed by feelings of distress, confusion and anxiety about past issues or finding it hard to make decisions in the present.

Sometimes life can become too overwhelming because of difficult events or relationships, both old or current. You may be struggling with anxious feelings or have become stuck in unhelpful behaviours as you try to manage your world. This can become a lonely and disempowering place. People come to therapy because they recognise these thoughts or strategies are limiting their lives. My work is humanistic in approach with a person-centred focus; this means that I will listen and value what you share and not be judgemental or directive. I build empathic therapeutic relationships that enable you to feel safe to share your emotions.

This may be anxiety, loss, or relationship difficulties.
Hello, I’m Sue. I work with adults who feel something isn’t quite right, even if life looks fine on the outside. Often this shows up in relationship patterns, overthinking, or feeling unsure where you stand with others. You may notice the same dynamics repeating, even when you want something different. You may not be in crisis, but there is a quiet sense that something needs to change.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
