For nearly 20 years I have worked extensively with individuals, families, couples and young people. My approach is integrative which means I draw on a number of therapeutic models to help tackle the complex needs that clients can present with. I am able to work with families, individuals and couples who are feeling ‘stuck’ and cannot see a way forward. I can be flexible in terms of appointments. I have an interest in attachments which can have a huge effect on how individuals manage their everyday lives.

I am an Integrative counsellor and psychotherapist working with couples and individuals.
I work with a broad range of clients aged 18 and above from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and occupations facing a wide variety of issues. You may want short term therapy to work on a particular problem; or you may want a more long term approach to work through the patterns you have noticed in your relationships with others and how you feel about yourself.

Welcome. The fact that you are here demonstrates a natural and healthy drive inside of you, a drive that has motivated you to want to connect and talk about things that are going on in your life. Whether it be a recent traumatic incident, persistent recurring low moods, overwhelming anxiety or a pattern of relating to others that has proved unsatisfactory, I would like to help. I aim to provide a safe but at times challenging environment where you will be encouraged to examine and let go of old and outdated ways of coping that whilst in the past may have been helpful are now getting in the way of the life you want to lead.

Although I have over the years worked with all kinds of issues, I feel drawn to work in the areas of relationships, stress and depression
My initial five year training was in Transpersonal Psychotherapy which means I incorporate the spiritual aspect into our therapy work for those that might be looking for and asking the bigger questions in life and wondering what's it all about. I will consider the key foundations such as sleep, food, exercise, relaxation when looking at your whole picture.

This can be individual counselling or couples.
My background is of a long standing NHS Professional who is dedicated to caring for others. I became a counsellor because it was an alternative way to help people and to build on a profession I love but within a different area. My focus is on creating a safe, non-judgemental and compassionate space where you can fully express, explore and experiment with any feelings, thoughts and emotions that you may be struggling with.

When relationships feel fragile and trauma has led to deep loneliness amongst other things, it can be hard to imagine the other side.
As a Dramatherapist under the umbrella of Creative Arts Psychotherapists I offer individuals, couples and groups the opportunity to explore in a therapeutic space using creative tools such as stories, mask work, character work, writing, music, etc. These tools allow for safety, containment and distance to the work and often serve as an agent of change.

I am deeply passionate about my work, creatively integrating the realms of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy to understand an individual holistically. I have transfered my practice from Paris to the UK in 2019 with an appreciation of the culture's richness and differences. Proficient in French and English, I welcome individuals in their unique perception of the world supporting them in the expression of their subjectivity. I provide psychological support, dealing with life's moments of distress and mental health variations.

My counselling style is varied as it is very much dependent on the individuals or couples needs and concerns.
I have trained with Relate and work with children and young people, (talking therapy and creative therapy), individuals, couples and families. I specialized in working with DA and SO too. I offer counselling that's based around client needs. The concerns clients have are varied, from mental health, personal, relationship, family, and more.

I am used to working with couples, as well as individuals.
I believe the foundation to any helpful therapeutic work is having a safe, respectful and non-judgemental space. I will take time with you to explore your current life circumstances and difficulties, to help you to understand how these developed, and to decide how to move forward.

For the past 25 years I have worked as a counsellor / psychotherapist. I also offer supervision to qualified and trainee therapists. Over the years I have gained a broad range of experience working with people from all walks of life, and from many cultures resulting in a good understanding of the requirements of both private individuals and corporate clients. My client base is broad and includes everyone from factory workers to professional footballers and actors. I feel it is important that a therapist can relate to their clients and this is something I excel at.

Perhaps you are feeling lost, in a 'strange place' or no longer feel yourself to be the person you once were. You'd like to understand why this is and talk about your difficult feelings with someone who is non-judgmental and who can help you better understand them.

Whatever brings you through the door, seeking to change or feel better, you no longer need to face your problems alone. It takes courage to look at ourselves and to sit with the myriad emotions and situations that have constructed the person that we are today: the hardest part is the first step, acknowledging the problem and seeking help. For more information about how I can help you and the approaches we may use together, please visit my website at www.nicolaflinn.co.uk

Building a trusting relationship is the basis for the most effective counselling.
We can all experience challenges throughout our lives and left feeling overwhelmed or confused. Often it can feel very hard to share these thoughts and feelings with family or loved ones. Counselling offers a safe place without judgement or advice where difficult, painful or confusing feelings can be explored. Perhaps there isn't a single issue and counselling can help make sense or clarify what is troubling you. This may only take a few sessions or longer term depending on what is needed.

FAQ - About Couples Therapy
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
