Anxiety, depression and
men's issues
are far more common than you might think.
I specialise in anxiety, depression and men's related issues such as barriers to intimacy and relationship challenges. In psychotherapy sessions I provide a confidential setting that encourages you to reflect on your journey. We will explore the feelings, emotions and impact significant events have had on the way you experience day-to-day life. We will work through your thought process moving towards the version of you that you've always wanted to be. Who is that person? Are they confident in themselves? And most importantly, do they allow themselves to smile, laugh and be happy?

Counselling for men who don't want counselling ... Many men see therapy as a waste of time and money, a one-sided converastion, solely focused on feelings, with little opportunity for you to fix things yourself. You want to go it alone. The very notion of discussing your private life with a stranger makes you recoil. You really want to be okay. You really want to just have your life together. But you cant' seem to stop being moody, angry, agressive, jealous and, sometimes even, suicidal. You may be drinking too much, using drugs or gambling too much. Deep down, you're suffering and so are the people around you.

Are anxiety and depression getting in the way of you enjoying your life? Perhaps you're experiencing difficulties in your relationship, with your career, or with your opinion of yourself? You’re not alone. 1 in 4 of us will experience mental health difficulties in our lifetime. Fortunately, more and more people are now reaching out to learn how to overcome it. If you’re experiencing difficulties such as excessive worrying, sleepless nights, low motivation or unhelpful thoughts around “not been good enough”, “being a burden” or simply “not being able to cope”, then you may be among the many others who have benefitted from therapy.

Counselling is a place to explore our thoughts, feelings and emotions. A chance to explore our life direction. An opportunity to pause and understand where we are and what is happening in our lives right now. It is a place to explore past and present events or traumas and a space to speak out loud thoughts that had previously been unspeakable.

Many of us carry deep wounds from our childhoods and early lives, often without being completely conscious of it. Still raw, or thickly scarred, these traumas can manifest in our adult lives, through sensitivity to hurt, inflexibility or unhelpful, self defeating behaviours. In time these unhealed wounds can wreak havoc in our lives and relationships. When this day comes we are left with two choices, either carry on as best we can, condemned to repeat the hurts of the past, or learn to give ourselves the care and love we have always deserved. Counselling offers an opportunity to begin a new life of healing and growth.

Starting the journey of looking into therapy & finding the right therapist can often be an overwhelming experience, so I hope you find this information helpful. I have worked in mental health for over 15 years and for the last 10 years I have worked as a counsellor in the NHS. I have helped clients work through many different issues over the years. Core to my way of working is the person-centred/ humanistic approach which involves working in an empathic, non-judgemental and genuine way with people. I also use elements of existential therapy, psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in the work I do with clients.

Hi, I'm Tim and I offer counselling for men using the online video platform Zoom, or similar. For me counselling is essentially a conversation. A conversation with a focus on the problem you want help with. I seek to provide you with professional assistance and guidance in resolving whatever those personal or psychological problems might be.

Maybe the reason you are here today is because you are experiencing feelings that you would rather not continue to carry alone. My practice is called ‘Accanto’ and I have built my service around this name, which translated means ‘next to or beside,’ and quite simply that is exactly where I will be for you. I do have an A-Z of what I cover but actually this is about YOU feeling that you can bring anything you need into the space that I offer. Counselling is initially about feeling better about all the different parts of yourself, learning to love your whole self so that you can then invite love and acceptance from others.

We all have times in our life when we suffer. This can take a myriad of forms such as depression, anxiety, grief, negative patterns of behaviour or a lack of meaning and purpose. The list is endless. Sometimes we cannot see a way out and need help. Psychotherapy can provide this help by creating a safe and compassionate space to explore our experience. By listening and empathising at a deep level I can allow you to fully engage with your difficulties, at a pace that is right for you. This is a collaborative journey that ultimately leads to more freedom, and contentment. All you need to bring to sessions is curiosity and openness.

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
