Therapy is your time to be curious about how you feel and who you are. Part of the therapeutic experience is enquiring into how things are between us, working in present time to illuminate what happens in relationship. Together we create a space where your own wisdom and understanding can emerge using compassion and kindness. With the intention of bringing a new understanding and capacity around key issues we look at your reactions to situations. Working together we seek to use the present moment to integrate and metabolise difficult experience. I find using humour in therapy can be a useful instrument for change.

There are many reasons why someone might seek the support of a psychotherapist: depression, anxiety, relationship problems, loneliness. Whether you need support with more acute feelings that are overwhelming, or simply need someone to talk to, psychotherapy could help. Sometimes we can feel very alone in the world; psychotherapy is an opportunity to engage in a relationship where you can be seen and heard, a safe space to explore what is troubling you. I offer an understanding and confidential space, where I place your needs centrally.

Perhaps you are struggling to communicate your needs within a particular relationship in your life; or feel “stuck” in repetitive communication patterns with others. Perhaps you have been struggling with your own mental health, and are noticing how this is impacted by, and impacts upon your position in certain close relationships. As an individual, couple, or family, I can explore with you different ways of understanding and communicating about those things which may be troubling you. I believe that therapy can help us to tap into our own resources and solutions to problems which maybe feel more difficult to discover alone.

We live in a culture that promotes the idea of strong, powerful individuals who live picture perfect lives. There is little room for showing our vulnerability, or our need for connection. There is a cultural expectation that when things are difficult for us we should just 'get over it' and not make a fuss, this might manifest in you with thoughts of "what's wrong with me", "why is this so hard" and "I should be able to manage by myself" and so on! You may be feeling fragmented, disconnected, numb, overwhelmed, fearful, unable to cope, you might feel like giving up.

You may be considering therapy in the hope of something better. Life might be feeling like a real struggle now or maybe has for a while. There may be difficult feelings like anxiety, a lack of interest in things coupled with challenges in your intimate relationships or at work. You may have a very specific issue that you would like to explore, or a general sense of ill-being and things not feeling quite right. Whatever is bringing you here is both unique to you and your story, and very human. Therapy can offer a place where those painful feelings and thoughts are not only welcome, but seen as offering a catalyst for change.

It’s a beautiful, but very complicated thing, to be a human. There are many difficulties we encounter throughout our lives that can leave us feeling overwhelmed or in distress – and yet so often, we feel as though we must push these feelings down. It takes a lot of courage to reach out and ask for help, to commit the time and energy to your own self-care and healing. Whatever has brought you to this space today, taking these first steps is a huge achievement.

I am a BACP Registered Integrative Counsellor and mainly practice Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). ISTDP is an emotion-focused, trauma-informed and attachment-based approach with very positive research outcomes. Some people begin therapy clear about what they want help with, others need some assistance in understanding their difficulty. I provide a safe space for clients to better understand their behaviour and experiences by making links between the present difficulty and the past. We also work together in the session to help you explore new ways of relating to yourself and your problem.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
