I am currently offering in person, online video and telephone counselling by appointment. If you are currently looking for a counsellor it may well be that you have reached a point of change. You can no longer put up with the current situation you feel you are in. You may be suffering anxious feelings or low mood, or be struggling with anger and frustration, or any number of other concerns. These are feelings that we all experience from time to time, but they can be limiting and have an effect on our general happiness and satisfaction with life.

I have experience of working with a wide-range of differing psycho-emotive (grief, anger, sadness, hopelessness) and behavioural problems (aggression, addictions, relationship issues).
I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years of experience working with adults in both NHS and private practice settings. Crises are often important moments in our lives that signify the need to make changes. These times can indicate that old ways of coping or patterns in relationships and behaviour are now no longer working. I offer a non-judgemental reflective space in which to support individuals to increase understanding and insight into their difficulties and to identify the changes they wish to make. I have been trained in a number of therapeutic modalities which I integrate and tailor to each individual.

Addiction can be life threatening, create fear and shame and often mask underlining issues, while creating further distress. Treatment needs an informed understanding, education, support and gentle challenge. As a lead therapist in a prestigious rehab, I manage other counsellors and work with clients bringing a specialism of trauma into the treatment of addiction. This weaves through the work in my private practice. My training, studies and experience, both professionally and personally has taken me toward looking at addiction as a symptom of psychological trauma.

"I am fascinated about Humans' ability to heal their emotional wounds when they feel supported and accompanied on their personal path. We all have greater potential and resources than we think. A lot of the times it is difficult to access these, for various reasons. Therapy helps us explore the ways we relate to ourselves and others. It is a journey towards finding / becoming yourself".

Are you suffering with anxiety, panic, depression, stress? Having relationship problems? Struggling with low confidence or self-esteem? Are you angry, irritable, short-tempered, or generally unhappy? Is your mind full of negativity that just doesn't go away? Confused, lost, overwhelmed, unable to concentrate or make decisions? Perhaps you could benefit from professional help. Asking for help is sometimes hard to do - perhaps you see this as a sign of weakness or failure. Sometimes we can't solve everything on our own. It's OK to ask for help. Admitting you have a problem is a sign of strength.

So often in our lives we reach a place where we are struggling in some capacity or another. It may be a deep-rooted issue that goes back to childhood, a past relationship or a trauma. It may be some destructive behaviour such as a form of self-harm or an eating disorder. It may be a negative thought process that is having an impact on our daily life. Whatever the issue, I believe counselling can help. Having a place where we can allow ourselves time and a calm space to think, talk and work things out can be absolutely priceless.

I am a creative, enthusiastic, yet boundaried psychotherapeutic counsellor based in Bristol, and specialise in a form of talking therapy called transactional analysis. I run Cactus Counselling. Why "Cactus"?, Well, anxiety, depression, low self esteem, and family issues tend to make us feel prickly on the outside but soft and vulnerable on the inside, and even if that means we're well adapted to our current situation, many people recognise that a change is needed to live in somewhere more clement than the deserts of life. I offer psychotherapeutic counselling to help people explore beyond their thorns.

You may be seeking counselling to make sense of thoughts or feelings, or look at relationships. Perhaps you're struggling with choices, feeling stuck or noticing an unhelpful pattern or past trauma? Above all, you may want something to change. I get how tough it can be to open up. With experience of working with people from a range of ethnic and class backgrounds, faiths, ages and sexualities I aim to build a relationship of trust. Welcoming and getting curious about all parts of you - such as a vulnerable, critical or rebellious part - can build connection to a more whole and vital sense of your Self, opening up more possibilities.

I am a UKCP registered Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapist-in-Training in my fifth year of study at the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling (BCPC). I work in Clifton in Bristol and offer affordable therapy to adults in private practice. For me, psychotherapy is largely about creating more self-acceptance. This can look different for different people, but in general it will involve a compassionate and empathic exploration of past experiences, and how they might interact with our present circumstances, to see how each may be creating blocks in our lives from a healthy expression of our feelings.

It doesn't matter when you bloom, it matters that you do. I see psychotherapy as a kind and safe space for you to be seen and heard. We all have a core goodness and ability to flourish in our lives. Sometimes we need a little help to find our way.

Update: As of April 2024, I am OPEN to new enquiries. With over 20 years in practice, my main objective is for you to know that you are welcome exactly as you are. Whatever is on your mind can be explored in a non-critical and open way. I want you to know that you are safe in your counselling sessions. You can rest assured that it is okay to ‘blurt it all out’, because we will be able to make sense of things together. You can also take your time to think and be quiet as you gather your thoughts. There is no pressure to go into topics you don’t want to speak about. In short, you can come exactly as you are.

Anger Management Counsellors

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
