I've had the most success working with professional, successful and creative men, aged 30-45, who've been struggling with cocaine
addiction
, gambling issues and /or alcohol problems. We work together on practical & actionable solutions, driven by their personal choices & desire for change. Unlike traditional
addiction
treatment, our work doesn't see abstinence as the sole barometer of success. It's about empowerment, not powerlessness. I provide a shame, stigma and label-free approach, which helps people outgrow their drug use or reduce any related harms, whilst addressing underlying stress, burn out, trauma & relationship concerns

For the past 18 years I have specialised in trauma and
addiction
, working with people within community-based organisations, schools, criminal justice systems, the NHS and Private Practice. I have a particular interest in how people make sense of their experiences. A particular lens through which this is viewed is narrative. This aims to be a respectful and non-blaming practice in which there is a collaboration to find the most satisfying story to live a preferred life. A pace for this work will be negotiated and agreed at the start and reviewed in each session or, when required.

I am a qualified counsellor and complementary health practitioner and tutor. I studied counselling and
addiction
at the University of Bath and I also have wide ranging life and work experience. Most of us can have times in life when it seems as though we can't cope and we may feel worried, fearful or confused. At these times it can be helpful to give ourselves the gift of speaking to someone who is not a family member or friend, someone we can be honest with, without fear of judgement or opinion.

Addiction
can leave us feeling helpless and hopeless. We desire to regain the lives that we once had. Rebuild the relationships we have damaged. Explore the causes and solutions to the behaviours that are causing us and those we love harm. Maybe you're a friend or family member of someone suffering from
addiction
and would like support and guidance on how best to help your loved one? Maybe you've been to treatment for your
addiction
and wish to continue the work you have started, or you are in long-term recovery and need the support of someone who understands your past. Perhaps you need a therapist that specialises in LGBTQ+ issues.

We'll explore what's troubling you and who you are in relation to it- whether it's relationship difficulties, abuse, depression, anxiety, disordered eating,
addiction
, grief, loss or stress.
We can all be confronted with different sorts of struggles at various times in our lives. Sometimes the source might feel obvious to us or maybe we might have begun to notice things have been 'off' for a while and it's hard to make sense of. We can be left feeling confused, lonely, disconnected from ourselves and unfulfilled in our lives. It's hard to understand what's going on, maybe things start to feel out of control or tough to manage alone. Naturally, we want to get a grasp of what's happened and take back some control of our lives so we can move in the direction we want for ourselves.

I specialise in mental health challenges and men's related issues such as barriers to intimacy, ED, low sex drive, pornography
addiction
, and relationship or social challenges. In psychotherapy sessions I provide a confidential setting that encourages you to reflect on your journey. We will explore the feelings, emotions and impact significant events have had on the way you experience day-to-day life. We will work through your thought process moving towards the version of you that you've always wanted to be. Who is that person? Are they confident in themselves? And, do they allow themselves to smile, laugh and be happy?

I have extensive clinical experience in
addiction
treatment, acute mental health, trauma and emotional neglect.
Life can be hard, however, there are some times when difficulties and feelings become overwhelming and everything seems like a struggle. Having a capable ally alongside you who is impartial, warm and honest can be what’s needed to recognise and shift out of unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour. Living in this world can't always be safe but I believe we are meant to feel safe in our bodies and our sense of who we are. Rather than 'fixing' problems, focusing on being 'better' or even happier, we can develop our sense of security, wholeness and worth, increasing our ability to navigate life's challenges.

In life, we all experience loss and major changes; we face difficult choices and overwhelming feelings. As a counsellor I know support and self-understanding are key in moving forward positively, but as a human I know this is easier said than done. Finding the right therapist and the consequent process is deeply personal and should be rooted in trust, empathy and an accepting environment. With experience in trauma,
addiction
and mental health, my focus is you, and the respect and understanding of your unique story and context. Whatever is going on, together we can explore your past, make sense of the present and plan for the future.

Often the Trauma experienced can lead to
Addiction
issues, initially as a way of self-soothing, though tragically often ultimately as a self-sabotage.
Are you constantly experiencing relationship challenges, leaving you feeling distressed, bewildered, let down and perhaps angry and self blaming for repeating these patterns? It can be utterly devastating to keep finding ourselves stuck in this way. Whether in intimate relationships, family dynamics, friendships or work situations, I can support you to explore and develop a deep understanding of the origins of these issues, and develop the practice of self compassion. This leads to healthier relationships with others. Maybe you have experienced some of the above and are also in the Creative/Performing Arts Community or Film/ Media.

Welcome to my profile. There are various circumstances which might bring an individual to counselling. Some people may be aware of the cause of their distress e.g. bereavement or difficulties such as
addiction
that they would like to address. However others may have a feeling of unease but can't seem to put a finger on what might be wrong in their life. Whatever the reason you have chosen to seek help, I will provide you with a safe and confidential space where you will have the opportunity to explore your thoughts and feelings and we will work together to make sense of your experiences.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
