Hi I'm Jo, I am here to support you on your journey towards emotional wellbeing and personal growth. I have an interest in working with anxiety, relationship issues, low self esteem and attachment issues and have also with clients who are struggling with depression, loss and grief and suicidal thoughts. I use Person Centred and Somatic approaches which means that I work on the basis of what you decide bring to each session with compassion and warmth and I may also work with bodily experiencing as a way to help to regulate the nervous system when thoughts and emotions feel overwhelming.

Sometimes we long for change, or find ourselves asking, ‘What is WRONG with me?’. Perhaps there’s an obvious reason - loss, life worries or a troubled relationship. Just as bad is when you can’t find a reason, you feel ‘nothing’. You lose emotional connection to life, others and yourself. This leads to inner conflict – different parts of you seem to want different things. One part is lonely, another is scared to connect. One part wants success, another wants to zone out. One part wants confidence, another wants to hide behind the curtains. You end up gridlocked into feelings and a life you don't want. I know, I've been there.

I would say that an important element of analytic work is that it helps to build real internal strength; one that can enable you to know and accept yourself. For People who are able to make use of analytic work, it can provide translatable skills that help deal with ongoing difficulties, not just the ones that brought you to therapy. Analytic therapy can be short term, but tends to be relatively long term work, dealing with issues that have likely been problematic for many years.

The therapeutic relationship is central to the way I work. We exist in relationships with others, with the environment we live in and with ourselves. It is in and through relationships that we may have become stuck and that we may also find freedom to be in the world in a way that is more adaptable, responsive and fulfilling. As such, I place emphasis on exploring what is happening in the here and now of the relationship between myself and my clients. I have worked with a variety of individuals and have particular experience and interest in working with men and young adults.

I have over 30 years experience offering psychotherapy in the voluntary sector, social services and NHS. I qualified with The Guild of Psychotherapists in 2008. I work with both individuals and couples. People approach me with a wide range of difficulties including depression, anxiety and relationship difficulties. Through ongoing discussions together it becomes possible to find more clarity as to what may be causing unhappiness and to become more aware of how you might make changes in your perspective or in life situation to find a better way forward.

Counselling and Psychotherapy can be a space to explore current or past concerns, desires and hopes. You may be wanting to get to grips with an aspect of yourself that keeps tripping you up or is holding you back in some way. You may be struggling with current losses, relationship difficulties, adversity, or have a sense of longing that you cannot make sense of. You may have experienced a sense of low self-esteem/ self-worth due to early experiences of being misunderstood or unaccepted for who you are or have experienced neglectful parenting or trauma or simply need a space in your life to figure something out.

I offer a protected space for you to explore your different needs and feelings, and reflect on your hopes and wishes - some of these may not yet be known. That's the magic: it's a place of discovery! I value working collaboratively to support your wellbeing and aspirations. This can include enhancing the quality of your relationships, being more creative in your life, and developing qualities that allow you to express what is most important to you. I have been in practice for nearly 30 years, working internationally with different cultures, and this has given me a broader perspective and appreciation of diverse points of view.

I am a trauma-informed integrative therapist. I work with clients to identify the wounds which are holding them back in life, helping them to lean into the pain so it can receive the attention it needs to heal. We are taught to avoid or fix our pain, this is a misguided myth; in this context of therapy, the solution is in building enough trust in the therapeutic relationship to make space for the grief to breathe, become unstuck and release. In doing this inner freedom is enabled. It's hard work, but it's heart work, and I am here to guide and walk alongside you in this process.

I offer you space in which you can share whatever troubles you. I understand that sometimes that might be difficult and painful, that you might experience strong emotions like frustration or anger, or feel anxious and confused. But whatever the issue is, we can address it together and see what could be changed.
