You may be experiencing a whole range of emotions that has brought you here. Whatever happens next, just know that it is ok to feel whatever you are feeling, and you don't have to go through it alone. I believe that building a strong relationship between yourself, the client, and me, the counsellor, based on trust, openness, and honesty, is key to affecting change and growth within yourself, and it is at the heart of the work that we will do together. You are the expert in your own life, and I am here to help facilitate your own understanding of yourself in a space that is safe and free of judgement.

I work with adults suffering from abuse or neglect, overwhelmed by the long-lasting effects of growing up in families where love was conditional, boundaries were unclear and emotional needs were left unmet. Some of you may have carried the heavy responsibility of managing a parent’s emotions or even “parenting” your own caregivers, especially in the presence of a narcissistic or emotionally unavailable parent. These experiences left you with deep emotional scars, creating patterns of shame, self-doubt, and difficulty setting healthy boundaries in adulthood. The good news is, therapy can help you find your way back to yourself.

I'm an experienced integrative therapist and work flexibly and dynamically with adults, couples, families and trainee counsellors. Early relationships and life events may have shaken your ability to fully value yourself or others. You might be bereaved, struggling with a relationship, experiencing depression or anxiety. I'm objective and compassionate, offering support to connect with frightening or buried feelings. Letting go of strategies that no longer work for you, without pressure or expectation, can help you to find your own truth and a sense of who you really are.

I have worked in private practice as a psychotherapist for over thirty years, and as a Jungian psychoanalyst for almost twelve years. In that time I have worked with a broad spectrum of people from many cultural backgrounds presenting a vast array of issues. Everyone is different. All that is required of you is to be willing to look into yourself, be open to your feelings, and invite your dreams, because they can help us. Ultimately I can't make the changes for you, you must want to change for yourself.

Finding a therapist can feel like a daunting prospect, especially at a time when you may be feeling at your most vulnerable. However, therapy can be an invaluable space to come to terms with past issues and find a greater sense of well-being in your life moving forward. One of the first questions when starting therapy is to consider what you hope to gain from the experience. For some it might be a way of regaining equilibrium after a recent loss or upsetting event, for others it might be that they are looking to change the way in which they relate to themselves and the world. Both are equally valid reasons to seek support.

I bring warmth, compassion and empathy to the therapy room, aiming to gently challenge and offer new perspectives whilst bringing a source of light in the darkness. With a particular interest in working with autism, ADHD, trauma, low mood, anxiety, self-esteem, bereavement and gender dysphoria. Adopting a trauma sensitive psychodynamic & psychoanalytical approach, where we can focus on both past and present experiences. This could be by using attachment theory, noticing repeating relational patterns or cycles of conflict, and thinking collaboratively about how you can begin to break free from these.

The therapeutic relationship is central to the way I work. We exist in relationships with others, with the environment we live in and with ourselves. It is in and through relationships that we may have become stuck and that we may also find freedom to be in the world in a way that is more adaptable, responsive and fulfilling. As such, I place emphasis on exploring what is happening in the here and now of the relationship between myself and my clients. I have worked with a variety of individuals and have particular experience and interest in working with men and young adults.

Have you ever felt an unpleasant heaviness on your chest or tummy? A struggle to get the words out of your mouth that creates a lump in your throat that suffocates you. Have you ever felt like avoiding others for fear of getting hurt, or you may have felt disconnected and unheard? You want to show strength and courage instead, you feel afraid and helpless.

I'm an integrative therapist based in Brighton, working in person and online, providing a space where you can talk openly about what's happening for you and be truly listened to. Over time, life can layer us with experiences, beliefs and patterns that leave us feeling disconnected from who we truly are. Therapy offers a space to explore these layers - to reflect on the stories we've been told or come to believe, and gently consider whether they still serve us. My approach is integrative and relational, and my aim is for you to show up, as you are, without fear of judgement and to feel supported in your process, at your own pace.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
