I believe therapy is a place where we can explore your experiences, patterns, and the ways you relate to others and to yourself. We are often shaped by relationships and the cultural worlds we move through, both past and present. We can gently consider these influences at a pace that feels right for you. I will offer you a space rooted in curiosity, compassion, and respect, where you won’t be judged, fixed, or analysed. Through experiencing a relationship based on acceptance, empathy, and care, new possibilities can emerge.

When something more is needed than talking alone, Brainspotting (a somatic therapy that evolved out of EMDR) can offer a gentle but powerful way to access deeper areas of the brain where emotional difficulties arise.
You may be struggling to keep anxiety, stress, loneliness or depression at arm's length, coping with family conflict, childhood trauma, ADHD, chronic illness or difficulties related to sexuality and relationships. There may be a particular issue you are facing or a vaguer sense that there must be more to life.

Within the safety of an empathic, non judgemental relationship, I aim to help people develop a greater understanding of themselves and the difficulties they are experiencing. I work in a flexible way that draws on a variety of theoretical models, and adapt my approach to the individual’s needs and particular goals. This often involves looking at both the current context and past influences, and working with the body to process past trauma, as well as learning strategies that enable people to live more fully in the present. I can offer long term, explorative work or a more focused time limited approach.

Well done for taking the scary first step towards seeking more support. I know finding the right therapist can be overwhelming. Hi. I'm Bex (she/they). Therapy with me is gentle and down-to-earth. Often, it's chatting over a cup of tea. It's a space to focus on you. I am trauma-led and I affirm people of colour, women, queer, and neurodivergent people. I'm neuro-queer myself (with ADHD), too. I'm non-judgmental and kind, yet honest. In sessions, we'll uncover what's going on underneath the story, working with what's blocking you from where you want to be. I welcome any tricky, messy stuff; you do not need to have it figured out.

There are many reasons why you might decide to engage with therapy. Perhaps you feel overwhelmed by your emotions or disconnected from them. It might be that you would like support to process a life event, or relationship challenges that feel difficult to hold on your own. Maybe different ‘parts’ of you want different things and that conflict prevents you from moving forward. My role is to listen and hear you fully, working to understand what it is like to be in your shoes. Experience has taught me that therapy can be transformative, allowing us the freedom to be ourselves and work towards positive, lasting change.

I will use elements of other therapies, such as focused, somatic, inner child work, internal family systems, cognitive behaviour and art therapy.
Have you ever felt an unpleasant heaviness on your chest or tummy? There may be a struggle to articulate your thoughts, leading to a sensation of suffocation in your throat. Have you ever felt like avoiding others for fear of getting hurt, or you may have felt disconnected and unheard? You want to show strength and courage; instead, you feel afraid and helpless.

Before becoming a counsellor I was a nurse for years. I know how to build connections with people and support them through painful experiences. There are events in life which need to be recovered from and I use my skills in creating a warm and welcoming, comfortable space in which my clients can do that. My clients and I often laugh, we've sat sprawled on the floor, we've sung... I want my clients to feel able to let it all hang out whatever way feels right for them in that moment. You'll lead the session but I'll be there with my perspective and expertise to help make sense of what comes up and to learn and adapt with it.

Somatic Counsellors
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
