There are different times in our lives when we may encounter challenges in our emotional world. Transition and change can sometimes trigger these challenging feelings. For example, moving home or employment, changing relationships or friendships; life changes such as going to university or reaching age milestones. Any of these can significantly affect the way we feel about ourselves. We react in different ways to what we encounter in our environment. We might become depressed or overwhelmed by intense emotions or we might feel anxious and unable to engage in social activities. It can all become too much to manage alone.

Free consultation available. My approach blends talking therapy with creative, somatic, and experiential techniques, offering theory-informed ways to understand yourself on a deeper level. You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck, noticing that talking alone hasn’t been enough. Perhaps your body holds pain or fatigue, or you feel out of sync with yourself and others. I offer a space where you can slow down and explore what’s happening beneath the surface — not to “fix” yourself, but to develop awareness and a sense of choice, honouring mind, body, emotions, and nervous system.

Undertaking psychotherapy can be daunting, especially nowadays, when so many different types of therapy are available. It can be overwhelming to make that decision. In my approach, I believe that each situation is unique. Through my experience of working with teenagers and their families, as well as adults in individual and group modalities and couples, I learned to develop a sensitive ear for my client’s needs. We all sometimes struggle due to external or internal pressures or a combination. However, I deeply believe that facing difficulties with compassion and an open mind can be liberating.

I am an experienced therapist working with both couples and individuals. I work with a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, bereavement, career issues and relationships. If you are a couple, you may be attending therapy to work through a particular challenge or event, to maintain a relationship that's essentially working well, or to consider ending a relationship kindly and respectfully. Whether you're attending individually or as a couple, at the start of our work, we'll identify what you want to achieve from counselling. Whether your aims are abstract or specific, we can work towards them together.

I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, insomnia, OCD or attachment trauma, among other states, where I help identify and then challenge the core unhelpful and rigid beliefs about themselves or the world which fuel such emotional difficulties.
What my clients most commonly seek is guidance to help them understand their own emotions, responses and rules that they hold about life. My clients are not dictated to, but supported in learning about what is helpful and rational in their lives, and what is targeted for change. Our honest talks involve a lot of empathy and humour, as there are common themes that we all recognise as causing issues in our lives. My clients are very much individuals, spoken to without judgement and encouraged to make changes to their thinking and then behaviour which will help free them from well-worn paths and being 'stuck'.

I am an experienced, welcoming and open-minded counsellor. Exploring in-depth what is troubling us with someone who is really listening, not just to your words but to the person behind them, can in itself be a healing process. It may also bring to light beliefs and ways of living that are holding you back. I draw on a range of integrative talking therapies (including Internal Family Systems). When something more is needed than talking alone, Brainspotting (a somatic therapy that evolved out of EMDR) can offer a gentle but powerful way to access deeper areas of the brain where emotional difficulties arise.

The Joy of my work is meeting people from many walks of life, each with their own unique story. I am an experienced counsellor within the LGBTQ+ community (of which I am a part). I also have lived experience of neurodiversity and have supported many neurodivergent clients. I work affirmatively with these communities although my practice is open to all. Many of us struggle to make sense of ourselves or to find belonging. You may be living with anxiety or depression or wanting to explore spiritual or relational issues. Maybe you are experiencing a difficult transition or longing for change but feeling stuck or hopeless.

At times life can be distressing or leave us feeling less able to cope. Perhaps you feel at odds with yourself; unsure of how to move forward or aware that you don't want to continue feeling as you do now.

I offer a collaborative space where we can explore the themes that bring you to therapy and support you in getting a deeper understanding of yourself and your needs. Many people seek therapy with the goal of “feeling better” – I am interested in what “better” looks like to you. What are the aspects of your life or yourself that you need to take a closer look at?

Life can feel tough - living with worry, sadness, self-doubt or relationship stress. I offer a supportive space to make sense of your experiences and their specific impact on you, and to find ways to relieve symptoms like anxiety and depression. You may have reached a point where it is affecting your life and health, and just want things to change. It is difficult to do this alone. Together, we can look at your specific experience, patterns that you may have noticed, and work on ways to achieve the change you are looking for - perhaps feeling lighter with clarity about yourself and more able to manage problems and relationships.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
