I work with issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, self-esteem, and life transitions.
You may be feeling anxious, low, or stuck in old patterns that no longer serve you. Perhaps relationships feel difficult, or you find yourself questioning who you are and what you want. Many people I work with want a space where they can talk openly, without fear of judgement, and begin to make sense of their feelings. You might be looking for more balance in your life, or simply the relief of being truly heard and understood.

I have over 30 years experience offering psychotherapy in the voluntary sector, social services and NHS. I qualified with The Guild of Psychotherapists in 2008. I work with both individuals and couples. People approach me with a wide range of difficulties including depression, anxiety and relationship difficulties. Through ongoing discussions together it becomes possible to find more clarity as to what may be causing unhappiness and to become more aware of how you might make changes in your perspective or in life situation to find a better way forward.

Psychotherapy creates space to explore who you are and what is getting in the way of you fulfilling your potential. Anxiety, low mood, mood swings, ADHD, unwelcome trauma symptoms are all ways that the mind is telling us that we need to pay attention to something that we have not been able to face. We will work together to listen with compassion to your deeper self. For some people, group therapy can alleviate isolation and equip you to find and build new relationships that fit you better. It helps build confidence to seek out and join new groups where you can be more yourself. I call this 'finding your tribe'.

At times life can be distressing or leave us feeling less able to cope. Perhaps you feel at odds with yourself; unsure of how to move forward or aware that you don't want to continue feeling as you do now.

For others, you may know what you need support with – anxiety, depression, relationship issues, low self-esteem or concerns surrounding your identity can be overwhelming.
I work in an integrative way. This means that I draw upon a number of different modalities and techniques and incorporate them into the way I work. My main influences are person-centred, Gestalt and existential. All of these complement each other and provide a flexible and responsive approach to my practice that reflects the humanistic philosophy I follow.

There are many reasons for coming to therapy but it’s not always easy to know how to get started. By coming to my profile, you have already taken the first step. You might be very clear about what brings you to therapy and what you want to achieve from it. Or you may not know exactly how to express what you’re feeling, but you know that talking to someone in a safe space may help. Perhaps a recent event has left you feeling de-stabilised, or you still feel affected by something that happened long ago. Maybe you would like to find out more about yourself and how you are impacted by your behaviour or of those around you.

Self Esteem Counsellors
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
