Clients have explored feelings of anxiety, depression, bullying, isolation, low self esteem to name but a few.
Hello, my name is Kath and I am a person-centred counsellor. Therapy offers a confidential, safe space where you can explore thoughts and feelings. By doing this you give yourself the opportunity to increase your understanding of yourself which in turn enables you to live your life in a more healthy and satisfying way. Not one size fits all so I offer an introductory half hour session so you can decide whether it feels okay to work together. I understand that taking that step to call can be hard, I may not always be able to answer the phone but please do leave a message and I will return your call as soon as I can.

We will all encounter challenges during our lives. It can be difficult to ask for help but in reaching out we show strength - it takes courage to be vulnerable, open up and acknowledge we need support. I specialise in working with low self esteem, transforming deep-rooted issues, anxiety, depression and feelings of being stuck - whether it be in your relationship, in your job, or life in general. I have been working on an individual basis with clients both short and long term since 2015. Are you tired of feeling stuck, sad, depressed, or overwhelmed by feelings of low self esteem, trauma and anxiety? Maybe life has thrown an unexpected event at you leaving you unsure how to move forward, tearful, scared or angry? If so you are not alone, nor do you have to cope alone. As a counsellor who cares I can help you move forward as gently and quickly as possible. As one of my clients with complex trauma said 'it wasn’t until working with Helen, that I felt my triggers were finally abated. For the first time time in years I feel calmer, lighter, more solid and grounded in myself. I am so deeply grateful'.

At different stages in our lives, we encounter difficulties that prevent us from fully enjoying life. It can be anything from anxiety and depression, to the loss of a person (through death or relationship breakdown), to deeply rooted emotional issues (such as low self-esteem or inability to form relationships). Other times, we are unable to fully explain what is troubling us - we just know that something is. Asking for help can be difficult - finding the right kind of help and support can be more challenging. With each person and difficulty being unique, I tailor my approach to suit each client's needs and communication style.

Do you suffer from counterproductive, intrusive thoughts? Are you critical of yourself, ignoring your achievements and strengths? Do you struggle with self-confidence and believing in yourself? Perhaps, you strive to make changes to your life, but no matter how hard you strive, you find that the same thinking patterns and responses occur to you repeatedly. You may find yourself stuck, or returning to lacklustre, even toxic relationships. You may find that you struggle with your self-image, whether physical, financial, interpersonal, spiritual or social.

I am a licensed, registered Counsellor with the BACP and have been practicing online since the beginning of lockdown. Previous to that I worked with clients face to face. Having worked with clients who have various different issues including relationship problems, low self esteem, trouble in dealing with emotions, fear of rejection, and more. I have the experience in lots of different issues but realise that everyone is an individual and deals with things in different ways so there is no 'one size fits all' . You are the expert on you, so I shall sit with you and support you in your quest to find a solution.

Here are some of the issues I have helped clients explore: depression, anxiety, stress, bereavement, loss, anger, family relationships, relationships with partners, self-harm, lack of self esteem, suicidal thoughts, health-related issues, self-development, creativity, mindfulness, spirituality, search for meaning.
If you decide to work with me it will be rather like setting out on a journey together. On that journey I’ll be your fellow traveller, companion and guide. Whether or not your reason for coming to see me is an external situation that’s impacting your life, a key part of our time together will be to explore your inner world. As we explore that world together you may develop greater insight into patterns of thought and behaviour that served you once but now limit you; you may find alternative ways of approaching difficulties; you may discover a way of being in the world that is more in tune with who you truly are.

There are many reasons why people decide to engage with therapy. Perhaps there is a specific issue that you would like to address, or you may wish to explore patterns and ways of being that no longer serve you. You may feel overwhelmed by your emotions or even disconnected from them. Maybe you just need a confidential space, free from judgement, where you can be heard as you process what is on your mind. Whatever brings you to counselling, I will work to understand what it is like to be you, support you as you deepen your self-awareness and perhaps consider changes you would like to make.

Hi I'm Zoe and I'm a qualified person-centred therapist specialising in child and adolescent mental health and well-being. I have extensive experience working with children and young people - by using creative techniques such as puppet/figure work, sand trays and paints/clay it allows me to gain insight into the child's world and identify areas they need support with when verbal communication is difficult. This in turn can help to build confidence, strengthen self-esteem and lessen anxiety. As a result children can find themselves in a better place to engage within the classroom, impacting positively on educational attainment.

Understanding ourselves, the decisions and choices we make and our relationships with others can sometimes be baffling. You may find yourself acting or behaving in ways that you struggle to align with your personal principles, wishes or desires. At times, your experience may suggest that your way of being doesn't blend with the world around you and you might find yourself meeting resistance from people or institutions. Therapy gives us the chance to explore these challenges together. We can look at your relationships with others and the meaning you make of them, helping to develop your insight, self-awareness and self-acceptance.

Self Esteem Counsellors

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
