I have gained relevant experience working with very severe presentations, from Autism to Personality Disorders , that made me keen in not discounting the importance of the pain you carry everyday within yourself.
Hello, I'm Giovanni, a Chartered Psychologist and UKCP Psychotherapist. I firmly believe that the therapeutic relationship is the main vessel of real change. Therapy is a journey to be embarked safely, and it can help you with your pain. Together, we can try to explore that pain or uncertainty that hinders the possibility you have to live a full and meaningful life. We will work together towards your objectives, it doesn't matter how far they seem now or how painful is to think about them.

We all find relationships and intimacy challenging - being close to people challenges our beliefs about ourselves and our trusted ways of relating do not always serve us well. When we get stuck over and over again in our intimate, family or work relationships, it is often due to our deeply buried or unconscious beliefs about ourselves. Many of my clients express what a relief it can be to share their problems and to realise that they are not weird or sick. We all struggle for a reason. In a group it can be especially helpful to realise that you are not alone - there are other people struggling with 'what it means to be human'.

Understanding ourselves, the decisions and choices we make and our relationships with others can sometimes be baffling. You may find yourself acting or behaving in ways that you struggle to align with your personal principles, wishes or desires. At times, your experience may suggest that your way of being doesn't blend with the world around you and you might find yourself meeting resistance from people or institutions. Therapy gives us the chance to explore these challenges together. We can look at your relationships with others and the meaning you make of them, helping to develop your insight, self-awareness and self-acceptance.

I'm a humanistic therapist which means I draw from multiple types of therapy to tailor the therapy experience to your needs. I think that you and I are both imperfect humans working together to gain understanding of your experience. I facilitate this exploration through compassionate curiosity and open exploration of emotions. I firmly believe you know yourself best; I’m just here to support. Whatever you feel like you need support with, I'm here to work alongside you with compassion and empathy (and sometimes a little silliness). I offer flexible scheduling online for people who travel regularly, or have difficult schedules.

There are different times in our lives when we may encounter challenges in our emotional world. Transition and change can sometimes trigger these challenging feelings. For example, moving home or employment, changing relationships or friendships; life changes such as going to university or reaching age milestones. Any of these can significantly affect the way we feel about ourselves. We react in different ways to what we encounter in our environment. We might become depressed or overwhelmed by intense emotions or we might feel anxious and unable to engage in social activities. It can all become too much to manage alone.

I specialise in anxiety, depression and men's related issues such as barriers to intimacy and relationship challenges. In psychotherapy sessions I provide a confidential setting that encourages you to reflect on your journey. We will explore the feelings, emotions and impact significant events have had on the way you experience day-to-day life. We will work through your thought process moving towards the version of you that you've always wanted to be. Who is that person? Are they confident in themselves? And most importantly, do they allow themselves to smile, laugh and be happy?

Counselling and Psychotherapy can be a space to explore current or past concerns, desires and hopes. You may be wanting to get to grips with an aspect of yourself that keeps tripping you up or is holding you back in some way. You may be struggling with current losses, relationship difficulties, adversity, or have a sense of longing that you cannot make sense of. You may have experienced a sense of low self-esteem/ self-worth due to early experiences of being misunderstood or unaccepted for who you are or have experienced neglectful parenting or trauma or simply need a space in your life to figure something out.

It can be difficult to choose a therapist or even decide if therapy is the right time for you. However, i believe this is the first step of wanting to start your journey and together we can build a therapy to suit your needs. Maybe you have been feeling stuck, depressed, anxious or need a space to explore your past experiences. Art therapy can be a safe space to explore these aspects of your life whilst feeling heard and seen. Together we can start to explore what you feel safe with and where you are now.

What are the common treatment options for personality disorders?

Personality disorders are typically treated with psychotherapy, sometimes in conjunction with medication. Therapy can help people with personality disorders develop skills to tolerate difficult emotions, navigate interpersonal relationships, and solidify their sense of self. Medications can treat symptoms that co-occur with the disorder, such as depression, anger, aggression, and impulsivity.

When to seek treatment for personality disorders?

Even though treatment for personality disorders can be an uphill battle, it’s best to seek help if you suspect that you or a loved one is struggling with one, because personality disorders can create substantial problems in life. Symptoms depend on the specific disorder, but overall signs of personality disorders include consistent difficulty maintaining close relationships, dramatic variations in self-esteem, and an unstable sense of identity.

How long does therapy take for personality disorders?

The timeline for treating personality disorders isn’t as clear-cut as it is for other disorders. Change can be difficult, taking from around one year to five, 10, or more. The key is finding a therapist who has extensive experience treating the relevant disorder. For example, a psychologist who specialises in narcissistic personality disorder has specific communication strategies that allow them to sustain the relationship and be more effective with narcissistic patients.

Can therapy help people with personality disorders?

Research suggests that for those who are motivated to address concerns or interpersonal conflict related to a personality disorder, therapy is far more effective than no treatment, and that most people in therapy see improvements. However, since personality disorders involve entrenched elements of identity, they are less responsive to treatment than are other mental health conditions. Finding an expert who has extensive experience working with a given personality disorder is one factor that increases the likelihood of successful treatment.
