I work with both individuals and couples.
My practice is informed by the belief that our present difficulties can often relate to our past experience. If we voice feelings which may have previously been unspeakable we can potentially change our perspective on ourselves and others in our lives now.

Helpful conversations with individuals, couples and families, online and face-to-face.
I've been counselling since 1989, and have extensive experience of working with sexual abuse and trauma, parenting and attachment difficulties, identity and relationship issues, depression and anxiety, bereavement and loss. I don’t claim to be an ‘expert’ in any of these areas because everyone's response is different and what matters is you and your own unique experience of these difficulties. I am committed to collaborating with you to find the resilient, hopeful part of yourself that becomes expert in managing your challenges and is motivated by the smallest signs of progress towards your preferred future.

Have you ever felt an unpleasant heaviness on your chest or tummy? A struggle to get the words out of your mouth that creates a lump in your throat that suffocates you. Have you ever felt like avoiding others for fear of getting hurt, or you may have felt disconnected and unheard? You want to show strength and courage instead, you feel afraid and helpless.

When life feels challenging, daunting or unfulfilling, it’s usually a result of trauma, difficult life events or relational issues. This can make you feel anxious, depressed and not quite yourself. Trauma sounds scary, but it isn’t always what you think it is. Trauma can be the result of a big, dramatic event in your life, and sometimes, it’s an accumulation of adverse life experiences. You might feel a bit alone, disconnected or misunderstood, and you probably picked up some negative thoughts and habits as a way to cope.

For couples it may involve finding strategies for improving communication or dealing with conflict to open lines of connection and intimacy.
Hi I'm Jo, I am here to support you on your journey towards emotional wellbeing and personal growth. I have an interest in working with anxiety, relationship issues, low self esteem and attachment issues and have also worked with clients who are struggling with depression, loss and grief and suicidal thoughts. I use Person Centred and Somatic approaches which means that I work on the basis of what you decide bring to each session with compassion and warmth and I may also work with bodily experiencing as a way to help to regulate the nervous system when thoughts and emotions feel overwhelming.

I’m a registered and accredited therapist with lots of experience of working with adults, young people, couples and families.
I take an integrative approach, meaning I draw on different techniques from psychodynamic and systemic family therapy, then once the past begins to become clearer I often integrate additional therapeutic methods such as Narrative Therapy (NT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Solution Focussed Brief Therapy (SFBT).

Hello! A very warm welcome to you. As we face these uncertain times in our world, we find ourselves coming up against many challenges that may be exacerbating our existing internal struggles. It feels more important than ever to find some sense of certainty and purpose in these difficult times. The very idea of isolation can bring on fear and anxiety, uncertainty around our livelihoods can trigger old and new coping strategies that may feel damaging to one’s self.

My guess is you’re feeling pretty low right now. The decision to start therapy doesn’t come lightly and now you’re scrolling through the profiles with no idea how to choose. I specialize in anxiety and depression, though I also work with other issues. When clients come to see me, they are often in a bad place and desperate to feel better soon. This is where I come in. I can’t promise miracles, but I promise I will meet you with kindness and compassion and certainly without judgment. Many of my clients report feeling calmer and more positive within just a few sessions.

Gottman couple counsellor.
Sometimes we long for change, or find ourselves asking, ‘What is 'wrong' with me?’. Perhaps there’s an obvious reason - loss, life worries or a troubled relationship. Just as bad is when you can’t find a reason, you feel ‘nothing’. You lose emotional connection to life, others and yourself. This leads to inner conflict – different parts of you seem to want different things. One part is lonely, another is scared to connect. One part wants success, another wants to zone out. One part wants confidence, another wants to hide behind the curtains. You end up gridlocked into feelings and a life you don't want. I know, I've been there.

Marriage Counselling

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
