Bereavement counselling can help in coping with the
pain
and potential loneliness of grief.
Unresolved childhood issues & trauma Counselling can be an effective way in which to make sense of past issues and patterns of behaviour in order to see how aspects of past history are perhaps getting in the way. Perhaps you are struggling to accept a change in your life or want to look at unfinished business from the past. Working through this in Counselling can help come to terms with change or loss in a more manageable way. Anxiety can gradually build up when perhaps we find ourselves overloaded by stressful circumstances. When we feel anxious it can be overwhelming and debilitating. It can become very hard to see clearly.

Perhaps you are turning to alcohol, drugs or unhealthy behaviours, as they are the only ways you know how to escape this horrible feeling. You might be wondering; why is this happening, where did it come from, will I ever get better?

My clients come to me because they trust I can weather the hard places we visit together. We need to be able to talk about the harder things in life and I would like to offer you the space for this; a space of acceptance, warmth, and goodwill. I am a Chartered Clinical Psychologist who has been studying and working in the field for the past 22 years and I now run a private practice in Mid Sussex. After completing a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Newcastle University in 2006, I have more than 14 years’ experience working within the NHS. I have a specific interest and expertise in working with clients who have been diagnosed with a progressive neurological condition such as Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson's Disease. Working in this way necessarily involves supporting people who are caring for loved one who is experiencing one of these conditions.

If you've arrived here, you are already thinking about counselling. You might feel depressed, anxious or overwhelmed and finding it difficult to cope with the challenges of life. Perhaps you have experienced a recent loss, had a sudden change of circumstances or are struggling with relationships. Maybe you don't even know what's troubling you. Research shows positive change happens when there is a good match between client and counsellor. It’s difficult to choose a counsellor or know what to expect from counselling without having a face-to-face meeting. This is why I offer a reduced rate intro session of £15 where we can meet

Do you feel drained and exhausted but don’t really know why? Do you observe other people around you seemingly effortlessly manage tasks that you seem unable to accomplish? Do you notice repeating patterns in your relationships or at work? Do you feel stuck? Do you feel you never found out who you really are or what you are good at? Do your passions, interests, relationships or jobs change all the time? Do you feel like you will never find out what you really want? Would you like to have more connection with yourself? Find more access to that inner voice that seems to know what you really need, deep inside?

How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
