I specialise in helping individuals deal with common life problems including depression, relationship breakdown and
bereavement
.
Are you feeling depressed; confused about what you feel; ground down to the point where you feel unable to cope; or simply wishing you could find someone who would genuinely hear you? Individuals choose therapy for a variety of reasons and often the biggest hurdle we face is an inner voice telling us our problems are nothing special and we should just get on with life. I provide a safe, empathic environment where you can find your voice and express your concerns without fear of being judged and to provide you with the means to work out your own answers and create the life you want.

My work with adults covers areas such as addiction,
bereavement
, meaning in midlife, self-esteem and self-loathing, low mood, anxiety, health-based trauma and relationship breakdown.
Understanding ourselves, the decisions and choices we make and our relationships with others can sometimes be baffling. You may find yourself acting or behaving in ways that you struggle to align with your personal principles, wishes or desires. At times, your experience may suggest that your way of being doesn't blend with the world around you and you might find yourself meeting resistance from people or institutions. Therapy gives us the chance to explore these challenges together. We can look at your relationships with others and the meaning you make of them, helping to develop your insight, self-awareness and self-acceptance.

You may feel the need for support in addition to what you already have in place, which is when you may decide to seek the help of a counsellor. I work Tuesdays & Thursdays from midday-2pm & 4pm-7pm, both remotely and face-to-face in central Brighton - please visit my website for more info. Contact me to arrange a free 30 minute introductory session to help you decide whether I am the right person to work with you.

The decision to try therapy can seem very daunting, but you have already taken the first step if you are here in this directory. Dealing with difficult issues,
loss
,
bereavement
, trauma, divorce/separation, identity , etc can feel utterly overwhelming. Initially, the prospect of sharing such experience may feel like a step too far. My own and clients’ experiences have shown me time & again that it is through the process of talking therapy that in sharing the burden the healing can begin. I have a passionate belief in the power of the wounded, with support, to find some reconciliation, with themselves, their history & in relationship

I work with those who have experienced
loss
of any kind - a
bereavement
, a job, a relationship, a pet, your health, or the feeling that you have just lost your way and don’t know where you are heading.
We have recently witnessed the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. For many people this was not only an opportunity to pay their respects to the Queen but also to give time to reflect and honour those loved ones who they have lost. For many people she represented certainty and security. These past two years have been very tough. Life continues to be uncertain and challenging. So much has changed which has had an impact on all of us. Have you lost someone close to you, or perhaps your job or your home? Has a sudden or unwanted change left you not knowing where you are going? Are you just hoping for life to get back to no

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
