I have also worked with depression and anxiety .
There are different times in our lives when we may encounter challenges in our emotional world. Transition and change can sometimes trigger these challenging feelings. For example, moving home or employment, changing relationships or friendships; life changes such as going to university or reaching age milestones. Any of these can significantly affect the way we feel about ourselves. We react in different ways to what we encounter in our environment. We might become depressed or overwhelmed by intense emotions or we might feel anxious and unable to engage in social activities. It can all become too much to manage alone.

I have experience of working with people suffering from trauma, anxiety , depression, stress, addictions, bereavement, relationship difficulties and negative body image as well as major life changes such as divorce or illness.
It takes courage to start therapy. Often, we are at our most vulnerable at these times. I believe the most important thing to establish first is trust. I am not here to tell you what’s ‘wrong with you’ or what you ‘have done wrong’ in the past. My aim is to meet you where you are and invite you on a journey for us to explore together, in collaboration, what is upsetting you and holding you back.

Some students are currently trying to study while experiencing depression or anxiety , or recovering from trauma or an eating disorder, while others are coping with challenges like family breakdown, bereavement or physical health problems.
I support students aged 16+, as well as adults affected by their time at school, including ex boarders. Being a student can be a hugely stressful experience. What should be an exciting and stimulating time can turn into a nightmare with low mood and self esteem; fear and anxiety . Sometimes, the impact is more subtle, and surviving difficult school experiences can force us to adapt in ways that can become unhelpful later in life. Our time at school can go on to influence us for many years to come. I have supported many adults affected by their school experiences, and struggling with the impact on their current lives.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
