I draw on specialist CBT techniques including exposure, behavioural activation, cognitive restructuring and imagery rescripting, alongside mindfulness and systemic approaches. Therapy is adapted creatively to your neurotype, relationships and goals.

I believe we are all susceptible, at some point in our lives, to feeling overwhelmed by what life can bring. Sometimes we encounter experiences that are hard for us to come to terms with leaving us in need of support, this may be in the form of a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, a job loss; any event that we struggle to comprehend and understand. Other times a series of events may have taken place that leave us feeling like we are walking under a big black cloud and fail to see a way forward. At times like this counselling can help.

Whether you are grappling with anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, low self-esteem, or the repercussions of past trauma, I will collaborate with you at a pace that is both comfortable and respectful.
My name is Nina Brennan, a BACP member for 8 years. In conjunction with my counselling practice, I have undertaken specialized training in trauma-informed care and domestic abuse. This training equips me with an understanding of the profound effects trauma and abuse can have on the mind, body, emotions, and interpersonal relationships. My practice prioritizes your safety, autonomy, collaboration, and empowerment. Rather than posing the question "What is wrong with you?", I endeavor to comprehend "What has transpired in your life?" and how your experiences may have influenced the challenges you encounter today.

You might come to therapy feeling anxious, stuck, disconnected, or exhausted—perhaps from difficult relationships, addictions, low mood, anxiety, or years of holding yourself together.
Humans live with a tension: we’re alone in our inner world yet we need connection to thrive. Hurtful or confusing relationships and the pressures of modern life can leave us adapting in ways that once protected us but now keep us stuck, disconnected, or exhausted. Therapy begins when something in you asks for a truer, more aligned way of being.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
