Psychoanalytic Counselling in Brentwood
Sometimes things build up gradually. Other times, something happens that leaves you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or not quite yourself. You might be struggling with anxiety, low mood, stress, anger, relationship problems, pornography addiction, low confidence, or simply finding it hard to make sense of what's going on.
Whatever has brought you here, you don't have to have the right words or know exactly what the problem is. Therapy gives you the chance to talk things through at your own pace, in a confidential, non-judgemental space where you can be yourself.

To me, psychotherapy is the opportunity to explore, and eventually accept yourself fully – to deepen your understanding of yourself, your responses, and your relationship with the people and the world around you. A process of awareness that can help you learn and heal from the trauma of your past. I had an unusual upbringing with very 'alternative' parents (hence the name) which meant that I was exposed to many weird and wonderful people, ideas and experiences from an early age. This came with its ups and downs, but fundamentally it has helped me develop a deep understanding of what it means to be human.

My commitment is to work with you until we find what actually shifts things, drawing on evidence-based approaches — psychoanalytic, CBT, relational or existential — tailored to what you need rather than a fixed method.
I offer psychoanalytic and CBT-informed therapy, drawing on relational and existential approaches informed by the latest research in neuroscience and attachment. Every plan starts with a thorough assessment, not a fixed method. The aim isn't just symptom relief, but real, lasting understanding of yourself.

Before beginning therapy and psychoanalytic training I studied philosophy and religion.
Many of the issues we face in life can be hard to deal with alone. With help, thinking about who we are, what we want and what is wanted from us we can identify and address problematic areas in our relationships with ourselves, with others and with the world of work and love, overcoming obstacles and reducing our suffering. I offer a safe and secure space in which to articulate whatever may be playing on your mind. The way I practice is non-directive, meaning that you decide what you want to talk about and when so can explore what may be troubling you at your own pace, either in person in east London or remote.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviours. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behaviour is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
