I have worked with lots of clever, successful people who appear to be at the top of their game, but are secretly stuck in patterns of overthinking, imposter syndrome and procrastination. When people first come to see me, they often tell me that they have reached a point where the strategies that work so well in other areas of their life just aren't working when it comes to their own happiness. They feel ashamed that they haven't been able to deal with their issues themselves, and they are desperately seeking solutions before they lose everything they have worked so hard to achieve.

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist working with individuals, groups and in supervision. I see psychotherapy as valuable to people from all walks of life and as a conversation which is led by the client, working towards deepening self-awareness and the capacity to live authentically. I have substantial experience with people from all backgrounds, including people from diverse ethnicities, sexualities, genders. I have extensive experience with people who have led quite chaotic lives; but equally, people whose lives appear relatively simple are often, at a private level, in need of the deep attention psychotherapy offers.

It can feel hard enough ordinarily, dealing with anxiety, stress and things we find difficult. And in recent times extra-ordinary pressures may have added to your concerns or dilemmas. The idea of seeing a therapist may seem daunting, but doing so allows you to explore and reflect on those aspects of life you're worried or unhappy about, rather than trying to work it all out on your own, in confusion, overwhelm or isolation. Let me support you, helping you find ways to be more connected to your inner strength, resillience and potential.

Is everything getting to you at the moment? Even when it may look to the outside world that we’ve got a great life, we can be struggling. Have you experienced a loss? Maybe it was a while back and everyone thinks you’re OK now but you still feel sad, angry and hopeless. Are you finding work stressful? You’re doing well in your job but you’re finding it difficult and maybe you’re not sure it’s really what you want to do. Are you trying to do all the “right” things for your mental health – going to the gym, eating well – but still feel that things aren’t right?

You are as diverse and unique as the issues that you may bring to counselling. You may be facing acute crises like a relationship breakdown or a sudden loss, or you might be dealing with long-standing issues such as anxiety, depression, or self-esteem problems. You might also be seeking counselling not because of a specific 'problem' but with the aim to better understand yourself, improve personal relationships, or enhance your overall quality of life. Whatever the reason, know that yours is as valid and as important as anyone else's and deserves to be heard and seen. Absolutely everyone is welcome, and that means everyone.

I am a Trauma-informed, accredited UKCP psychotherapist and EMDR practitioner with 20+ yrs experience. I work with symptoms: depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, panic attacks, mistrust, hypervigilance, hopelessness, self-destructive behaviour, loss of sense of self. These are all symptoms of something deeper and we can work to alleviate these symptoms by working with the deeper issues that cause these. These symptoms are often caused by: abuse - sexual, psychological or emotional; neglect; loss; relationships; bullying; illness and many other 'normal' life events which can leave us not living our life fully.

Is anxiety, a bereavement or another type of loss affecting your ability to live your life fully? I am specialised in helping adults and young people understand how their body and mind is reacting to grief and external stresses. A growing awareness, and some practical strategies, can help you to develop self-compassion and a sense of empowerment to live a more enriching life. Grief and anxiety can create feelings that are confusing, and perhaps a feeling of isolation and disconnection. I can help you to adapt to life after a profound loss, or a stressful experience, in a way that respects your personal feelings and circumstances.

I am warm and friendly and offer clients a safe space to explore their thoughts and feelings in a non judgemental way. Life can get in the way. Often there doesn’t seem time to absorb what has happened or how it has affected us.. Dealing with anxiety, stress, grief and loss are always hard so finding the right counsellor with whom you feel safe secure and listened to is the most important ingredient to enable you to explore and manage overwhelming thoughts and feelings. Together, we can face these feelings.

I offer integrative child and young people's counselling and therapeutic child and teenage support. All our children and young people sometimes go through phases where not everything is going to plan. There might have been a bereavement, exam stress, bullying or sudden life changes have had an impact on their self esteem. Your might be concerned because your child has recently become angry, anxious, withdrawn, a bit more challenging or has developed difficulties in school. Sometimes they also struggle to find good friends, put themselves at risk or their physical health becomes affected.

How can I find a therapist in Brentwood?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
