Men's Issues Counselling in Brentford

Perhaps you’re used to keeping the peace, putting other people first or doubting yourself, and it’s beginning to leave you anxious, low or frustrated. You may be struggling with confidence, difficult relationship patterns, boundaries or a sense of where your life is heading. I work particularly well with men, both gay and straight, although my practice is open to everyone. Together we can explore what has shaped these patterns, understand the part you may play in them, and work towards greater confidence, healthier relationships and more choice in how you live.

I am a registered integrative psychotherapist and occupational therapist with over fifteen years across the NHS, The Priory, private practice and corporate settings. I am registered with UKCP/BACP for psychotherapy and HCPC for occupational therapy, and I work with most major UK insurance providers including BUPA, Aviva, Vitality and WPA. People who have had insight without it producing change.

We all go through difficult periods in our lives. Sometimes for easily identifiable reasons - bereavement, loss, heartbreak, employment stress, family or relationship difficulties, trauma. But sometimes things don't feel right and we don't know why. Perhaps you wake up with a feeling of dread. Perhaps you feel empty, going through the motions of a life that no longer feels like the one you wanted. Talking to friends or family can feel impossible, either from shame or a fear of being a burden. It's easy to become trapped in lonely isolation and feel helpless to effect change. I hope I can help you to lighten the load.

I am a genuine, caring, and insightful psychotherapist who offers a safe and supportive therapeutic space for men to explore themselves more honestly. Therapy can help you develop greater self-awareness, understand patterns that may be holding you back, and begin to make meaningful changes in your life. The decision to seek therapy is not always simple. For many people, it takes time, courage, and a real commitment to care for themselves. Once that decision is made, the work can become a space for growth, reflection, and change. I have over 10 years of experience now and work full time.

My clients are successful executives, academics, and creatives who find that life has become harder than it needs to be. Problems often center around relationships. At home, they’re experiencing misunderstandings, tears, and anger. While their work may feel competitive, relentless, and stressful. They are in danger of becoming overwhelmed. The goal is to feel calmer, closer to their partners and children, and more in control of themselves. Above all, they want to understand why things that once worked no longer do, and to find a steadier way forward.

Hello my name is Stuart. I became a counsellor because I have always been interested in people and their stories. I am curious about why we react and respond in different ways to life, to the good parts, the painful parts, the constant changes, and the moments that leave us questioning ourselves. I have often wondered why some people appear to thrive while others feel they are only just getting through, and why everyone’s approach to life can look so different.

I originally trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in the 1980's and then worked as an actor for many years: over the last 22+ years my life started to take a different turn and I now enjoy working as a counsellor with individual clients. As an Integrative Transpersonal Counsellor I draw together different approaches whilst offering therapy with soul - looking beyond the immediate problem, or symptom to work in ways that honour each client's deeper journey. For me therapy has meant a chance to revisit old stories and beliefs whilst gaining fresh insights and understandings.

I see clients (and supervisees) from all backgrounds and specialise in working with men, or women seeking to better understand difficult relationships with men. I work with many issues including stress, feeling sad, low self-esteem, loss and relationship difficulties. My clients often want to change something about themselves and need a place to feel comfortable, share their emotions and better understand their needs. Articulating emotions and needs can be a struggle at first for some and I am experienced in helping clients to open up over time. My work is with individual clients online or in person, both short and long term.

Hi I'm Matthew, I'm a qualified and experienced therapeutic counsellor. Therapy creates a unique space in our life where we’re able to speak most openly and honestly, make sense of our complex lives and ask questions we might not ordinarily think to ask. And it’s a space where important changes begin to occur. Therapy's often about change. We may want to challenge our habits and patterns, re-shape relationships or even alter the trajectory of our life completely. Sometimes the change we seek is an internal one, changing how we feel about ourself and our past, how we experience day-to-day situations, how we envisage our future.

Men's Issues Counsellors
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
